Dr. Kevin Lanning
Summer, 2003
Statistics 2023/Psychology 3234
Overview
This course provides an introduction to statistics. "Statistics is the science of collecting, organizing, and interpreting numerical facts, which we call data" (Moore & McCabe, 2003, p. xxi). Statistics is a medium for conveying the information which exists in data, especially quantitative data. Data are the stuff of our experience. The knowledge that you gain in this class can make you a more informed and thoughtful person.
We'll explore data sets from a variety of content areas, including politics (2000 election data), traffic safety (cell phones, dangerous intersections), demographics (US census data), environmental studies (global warming data), and potentially other data that interest you.
You may earn credit for either STA2023 or PSY3234, not both. There are no prerequisites.

The required text is Moore, D. S. & McCabe, G. P. (2003) Introduction to the Practice of Statistics (4th ed). NY: W. H. Freeman. (Please bring it with you to class).
