Syllabus for Psychology 1012 - General Psychology

Psychology 1012 …

…is an honors section of General Psychology.  The subject matter is far-ranging as it includes broad and narrow aspects of the study of mind and behavior.  Topic areas include research methods, biological psychology, cognitive psychology, motivation and emotion, personality and individual differences, social and cognitive development, and abnormal and social psychologies.

Dr. Kevin Lanning (lanning@fau.edu). Office is MHC 145; office hours are M 1-4 F 11-2.

Readings

There is one text:  Myers, D. G. (2004).  Psychology (7th ed).New York:  Worth. The book is packaged with a set of readings from Scientific American, several of which will be assigned as noted below.   The website for the text may be found here.

Grading

Grades will be based on a 100 point scale.  There are 110 points possible.   Please do not ask for credit for late assignments.  You may earn points as follows.

From exams, 75 points. This includes 25% for each of three exams.  Exams may include multiple-choice, short-answer, and essay questions.  Exams will cover both readings and lecture/discussion materials.  The final exam will be cumulative.

From research participation and/or independent study, 10 points.  Two hours credit from some combination of research participation and/or the writing of brief synopses of research articles. Articles must be taken from the 2003 through 2005 issues of Current Directions in Psychological Science, which may be found online .  Proof of participation in research or written summaries in your first hour must be submitted by 2/1, in your second hour by 3/1 (see schedule below).  

From online exercises and quizzes, 19 points.  You can earn as many as 19 points by attempting online quizzes and/or activities during the course of the term.  All of these may be found at the textbook website here

For credit, all quizzes and activities must be completed by the Friday following the date in which we discuss the material (see schedule below).  You may get credit for only one exercise/quiz per chapter.  At the website you should have your results sent to me electronically (lanning@fau.edu).  If the find the technology non-cooperative,  send me an email including the chapter, assignment, and time and date at which you tried to submit your information.

From class participation, in-class exercises and attendance, 6 points.  Though I do not as a rule take attendance, in-class exercises will occasionally be administered for which attendance will be required to earn credit.
