Highlights of Discussion Section

Participation

Participation grades will not be based on the quantity of participation but rather the quality of it.  Timely and insightful remarks and lively discussion will benefit all in the discussion group.  Participation will account for half of your discussion section grade.

Attendance

Attendance is mandatory and it will count for half of the discussion section grade.  Poor attendance will not only hurt your discussion grade but will hamper your overall success in the course.  For every discussion section meeting that you miss one percent will be deducted from your final grade.  After four unexcused absences you will receive a zero for the discussion portion of your final grade.

Short Papers

Over the course of the semester you will be assigned 10 one page papers that will answer a question that will be posted on the course web page.  The short papers are due in person at the beginning of the next discussion section meeting.  No late papers will be accepted.  Each week one or more students will be asked to read their short paper to the class.  The intent of these short papers is to prepare you for each week’s discussion section and to aid you in the creation of the longer papers.

Reading Assignments

All reading assignments MUST be completed before attending the weekly discussion section.  The reading assignments and the short papers are the foundation of the discussion section.
