The Discussion Section

Discussion is an integral part of the course.  Every Friday, you will meet in individual sections of thirty students each to discuss the readings and course themes.  It is essential that you complete all of the required reading for the week and that you are ready to discuss them by each Friday’s discussion section.  Your participation (and attendance) in this discussion section counts for a significant portion of your grade.  Almost every week, you will be required to hand in a one-page paper based on the readings.  These papers will serve as the springboards for discussion.  Be prepared to share your essay with your classmates at least once during the semester (and possibly more than that)!

The Discussion Section and Your Overall Grade

Weekly response papers: 20%

Attendance and participation: 10%

Attendance and Participation

As discussion is an essential part of the course, your participation is expected during the Friday sessions.  Attendance is required on Fridays.  Missing each class lowers your overall grade by 2%; missing more than four classes leads to losing the entire 10%.   The unique role of the Friday sections is that they give students the opportunity to explore and analyze the themes presented in class in greater detail.

My Role as the G.A.:

I will facilitate your discussions and understanding of the class subjects in our Friday sections.  I will also be grading your work this semester.  Most importantly, as your graduate assistant, I look forward to helping you have a successful semester.  If you need help on your papers or have any other questions or concerns, you should always feel free to contact me either personally, at my office hours, or by email.
