The images on the right are of an Alzheimer’s disease brain:
(a) Brain atrophy, Shrinkage, is characteristic of AD brain (widening of sulci, narrowing of gyri)--seen lower pic in (a)
(b) Horizontal CT Scan section of AD brain (right) again reveals shrinkage and cell death (notice blackness) in picture (b)
(c). MRI Scan shows ventricular enlargement in AD brain, right in (c)….Cell death, apoptosis, causes brain atrophy but swelling in ‘dead space’ areas and therefore imaging shows enlargement, MORE black areas!
CT and MRI examples here highlight the structure of the brain and allow us to see abnormalities INSIDE the brain.
