Slide 11 of 11
Notes:
Bilateral auditory cortex: animal can detect pitch, intensity diff, but not “tunes” (Lesion of Lateral lemniscus: animal is deaf)
becomes hard to localize sound; damage on left auditory cortex makes it hard to recognize speech of others (recall left ~ speech)
Hearing agnosias: not deaf but cannot comprehend meaning of sounds
damage on left? agnosia with speech recognition problems
damage on right? agnosia with nature or locale of tones made difficult
HIGH doses of antibiotics may induce hair cell loss first at base of basilar membrane, which produces a loss of hearing for high frequency sounds (don’t stop taking them if prescribed because of this information though)!
Cochlear implants restore speech perception by stimulating different regions of the basilar membrane (for people that have deafness caused by damage to hair cells for instance).
