Notes:
Inner hair cells (approximately 3500) form a single line of cells along the basilar membrane
~12,000 outer hair cells on the basilar membrane as well
The tectorial membrane is attached to the outer hair cell cilia
Cilia project from the top of each hair cell (think of lots of little eyelashes)
Hair cells synapse with bipolar neurons and then send sound information to the brain via the Organ of Corti and the cochlear nerve, 8th cranial nerve.
