SFMUN
2009The South Florida Model United Nations (SFMUN) is a simulation of the United Nations where high school, community college, and university student delegations represent countries in three UN bodies. Student delegates will address key contemporary issues facing the international community and the United Nations.
Model United Nations simulations provide students with the unique opportunity to play the role of diplomats and ambassadors engaged in multilateral diplomacy. Participants, representing countries of their choice, gain insight into issue areas, international diplomacy and the workings of the United Nations. In addition, students participating in the simulation improve their debate and public speaking skills.
Three United Nations committees will be simulated: General Assembly 1st (security and conflict); General Assembly 3rd (social, economic, and humanitarian); General Assembly 6th (legal). Membership in the three General Assembly Committees is universal.
(See country selection list for UN members)
Fees: $25.00 per student delegate. There is no
charge for faculty advisors. Lunch is provided at no additional charge to
all students and faculty advisors. In order to reserve a country or group
of countries, a check in the amount of 50% of total registration fees must be
submitted with registration form (see link below). No countries will be
held without the deposit, the deposit is non-refundable. All outstanding
registration fees must be paid on or before the day of the simulation.
Position Papers: All participating delegations are encouraged to draft and submit position papers for each committee. Position papers are succinct articulations of a country's position on a particular issue. The position paper should be divided into three one-paragraph sections, with each paragraph committed to one of the assigned topics. Position papers should be submitted to professor Morton (jmorton@fau.edu) no later than one week prior to the simulation.
Event Sponsors: The South Florida Model United Nations simulation is made possible by the generous support of the Dorothy F. Schmidt College of Arts & Letters, the Department of Political Science, the FAU Peace Studies Program, the Schmidt Family Foundation and the United Nations Association of the USA (UNA-USA) Palm Beach Chapter.
