My teaching philosophy has always been, inclusive of treating individuals with respect, to encourage students to learn more than they thought possible. My coursework is: (1) highly structured; (2) requires a substantial amount of writing; and (3) incorporates quantitative reasoning and skills.
I have had a wide variety of teaching experiences, ranging from large (200+ students) introductory courses, advanced undergraduates, core cores in graduate programs, to advanced seminars at the doctoral level. Introductory courses stress language and terminology and general familiarization with the subject matter, instructed in a manner designed to engage the student in the overall field of planning/geography. Intermediate level courses stress working with concepts and tools (in both lecture and studio/workshop formats). Advanced courses stress policy formulation and evaluation, and have an institutional focus.
I employ the Internet and distance-education software in virtually all courses, although mostly as a supplement to traditional classroom teaching, have experimented (successfully) with alternative (time frame) formats, and developed a Planning Abroad program that is continuing to diversify its portfolio of activities (short courses, formal exchanges, hosting international Ph.D. students for extended time frames, etc.).
Moreover, I enjoy supervising theses and independent studies. These experiences allow me to utilize my ability as a writer and teaching writing/thinking skills, and they continue to challenge me to think through problems that I would not have otherwise initiated or investigated. Several of these have resulted in joint (student first) publications and/or presentations.
