Kristen Murtaugh is Florida Atlantic University’s first Vice President for Strategic Planning. She is responsible for the oversight and continued updating and development of the University’s strategic plan, which was approved by FAU’s Board of Trustees in 2006. She serves as the senior staff liaison to the Board of Trustees’ Strategic Planning Committee and directs and supports the work of the University Strategic Planning Council.
A resident of Delray Beach, Dr. Murtaugh joined FAU in 1992 as associate dean for credit & extension programs in the division of continuing education. She has served as associate vice president for the Northern Campuses and, from 2002-08, as vice president for the John D. MacArthur Campus in Jupiter. As chair of the University Strategic Planning Council, Dr. Murtaugh had a leadership role in developing FAU’s Strategic Plan 2006-2013. In January 2009 she assumed her current position.
Born in Wisconsin and raised in Winnetka, Ill., Dr. Murtaugh received her B.A. in modern languages and literatures from the University of Toronto (St. Michael’s College) and her M.A. and Ph.D. in romance languages and literatures from Harvard University. She is the author of the monograph Ariosto & the Classical Simile (Harvard University Press) and has published and presented on Italian Renaissance epic poetry.
Dr. Murtaugh’s husband, Dr. Daniel Murtaugh, is on the faculty of the department of English in FAU’s Dorothy F. Schmidt College of Arts and Letters.
