Ramaswamy Narayanan, Ph.D.
Assistant Vice President for Research
Chair, Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry

Dr. Narayanan serves as Assistant Vice President for Research in the Division of Research and Chair of the Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry in the Charles E. Schmidt College of Science at Florida Atlantic University. He received his Ph.D. in biochemistry in 1980 from the National University of Dublin in Ireland. He did his postdoctoral work at the National Cancer Institute, NIH and at the U.S. Centers for Disease Control. Subsequently, Dr. Narayanan continued his training at Yale University and Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center. At Hoffmann- La Roche Inc. in Nutley, NJ, he developed his expertise in biotechnology, molecular medicine, drug discovery and cancer research. A leader in antisense technology and bioinformatics, Dr. Narayanan has concentrated his research efforts on solid tumors.

Dr. Narayanan joined FAU as a professor in biological science in 1998. Since then he has worked as Associate Director for the Center for Molecular Biology and Biotechnology, Director of the Integrative Biology Ph.D. Program and as Associate Dean for Research and Industrial Relations in the Charles E. Schmidt College of Science. He currently chairs the Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry in the Charles E. Schmidt College of Science.

His work at FAU has led to two issued patents and provided the basis for the first biotech startup at the University. He has published over 72 peer-reviewed publications and numerous book chapters. He is on the editorial boards of Antisense Research & Development, Anticancer Research, In Vivo and Current Cancer Therapy reviews. He has given lectures and seminars at Karolinska Institute, Sweden, Katholieke University, Leuven, Belgium, The Netherlands Cancer Institute, Amsterdam, Tokushima University, Japan, Sylvester Cancer Center, UM, Florida State University, Washington University, St. Louis, Human Genome Sciences and others. He is a reviewer for NCI study sections and has been a site visit member for NCI and numerous European funding agencies.

Dr. Narayanan and his wife, Jeanine, have one daughter (Anndal) and live in Delray Beach, Florida.
