Fringe Benefits for Faculty Summer Salary 98-07
April 10, 1998
Please check the Facts for Forms page for the latest fringe benefit and indirect cost rates.
Purpose:
To establish a consistent policy for the treatment of fringe benefits charged to summer salaries on sponsored research grants and contracts.
Background:
A faculty member, holding an academic year appointment, who applies for a summer salary on a research grant/contract proposal, should include full benefits in the budget request. In some instances, a faculty member may choose to be paid during the summer from the OPS category and waive the fringe benefits. However, by requesting a waiver of fringe benefits, a faculty member who is in the retirement program will lose that portion of the retirement benefits the state contributes during the summer period.
The following procedures clarify the policies and recommended steps to obtain a waiver.
Policy & Procedure:
- Unless the faculty member applies for a waiver, in writing, the full fringe benefit rate will be charged to the grant/contract account.
- The faculty member who chooses not to have benefits taken from his/her summer salary (by obtaining a waiver) will be paid as OPS.
- To establish a waiver, the faculty member must submit a written request at the time of submission of the original research proposal. In addition, a copy of the waiver request must be attached to the personnel contract for the relevant period.
