Aging

American Federation for Aging Research - 2010 Awards Programs
The Federation (AFAR) provides up to $75,000 for a one-year award to junior faculty (M.D.'s and Ph.D.'s) to do research that will serve as the basis for longer term research efforts. AFAR-supported investigators study a broad range of biomedical and clinical topics including the causes of cellular senescence, the role of estrogen in the development of osteoporosis, the genetic factors associated with Alzheimer's disease, the effects of nutrition and exercise on the aging process, and much more. Deadline: December 15, 2009. Go to: http://afar.org/grants.html

Sponsored by the Ellison Medical Foundation, the Julie Martin Mid-Career Award in Aging Research encourages outstanding mid-career scientists who have not been engaged in aging research but whose research is relevant and could lead to novel approaches to aging. Also eligible are aging researchers whose research is high risk, and thus not attractive to NIH or other traditional sources, but has the potential for high payoff in advancing our understanding of basic aging. Two four-year awards of $550,000 will be awarded. Application Deadline: December 15, 2009. Go to: http://www.afar.org/Ellison%20Mid-Career.html.

Artists & Writers

Yaddo - Artists Community
Yaddo is an artists' community located on a 400-acre estate in Saratoga Springs, New York. Its mission is to nurture the creative process by providing an opportunity for artists to work without interruption in a supportive environment.

Yaddo offers residencies to professional creative artists from all nations and backgrounds working in one or more of the following media: choreography, film, literature, musical composition, painting, performance art, photography, printmaking, sculpture, and video. Artists may apply individually or as members of collaborative teams of two or three persons. They are selected by panels of other professional artists without regard to financial means. Residencies last from two weeks to two months and include room, board, and studio. Artists who qualify for Yaddo residencies are working at the professional level in their fields. An abiding principle at Yaddo is that applications for residency are judged on the quality of the artists' work and professional promise. Yaddo accepts approximately 200 artists each year, about 18% of the number who apply.

Collaborations. Small groups (2 to 3 individuals) of artists wishing to work collaboratively are encouraged to apply. Each member of the group should submit an application form, resume and application fee. Work samples may represent individual work or previous collaborations. Specific concerns should be directed to the Program Director before application. Support personnel or interpretive artists, such as computer programmers, instrumentalists, set and lighting designers and dancers, cannot be included in a residency as part of a collaborative team. Yaddo has a strong tradition of internationalism, and welcomes artists working in all disciplines from around the world. Go to: http://www.yaddo.org/. Florida Dept. of Transportation - "Construction and Design of Precast Piles with Stainless Steel Reinforcing"
Florida's Dept. of Transportation Research Center seeks research proposals (RFRP # 09/10-001). Deadline: September 22, 2009. To obtain more information, go to: http://www.dot.state.fl.us/research-center/Program_Information/RFRP%2009%2010%20001.pdf

Health Policy Research

Robert Wood Johnson Foundation - Scholars in Health Policy Research
The Robert Wood Johnson Foundation Scholars in Health Policy Research program helps to develop a new generation of creative health policy thinkers and researchers within the disciplines of economics, political science and sociology. Each year the program selects up to nine highly qualified individuals for two-year fellowships at one of three nationally prominent universities with the expectation that they will make important research contributions to future health policy in the United States. Deadline: October 21, 2009. Go to: http://www.rwjf.org/applications/solicited/cfp.jsp?ID=20841

Innovation Research

National Science Foundation - Small Business Innovation Research
The NSF's Directorate for Engineering, Industrial Innovation and Partnerships' Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) Program (NSF 09-609) aims to stimulate technological innovation in the private sector by strengthening the role of small business concerns in meeting Federal research and development needs, increasing the commercial application of federally supported research results, and fostering and encouraging participation by socially and economically disadvantaged and women-owned small businesses. $45 million is available for 200-300 grants. Only two proposals per organization will be accepted for this solicitation. Deadline: December 3, 2009. Go to: http://www.nsf.gov/pubs/2009/nsf09609/nsf09609.htm?WT.mc_id=USNSF_179

Intelligence

Intelligence Advanced Research Projects Activity (IARPA), Office of Incisive Analysis - Cultural Insights from the Use of Metaphors
The Intelligence Advanced Research Projects Activity invests in high-risk/high-payoff research that has the potential to provide our nation with an overwhelming intelligence advantage over future adversaries. The group reports to the Office of the Director of National Intelligence's Director of Science and Technology (ODNI/DS&T). At this time, the group is putting out a Request for Information (IARPA-RFI-09-04) for Cultural Insights from the Use of Metaphors, and would like to receive responses by Sept. 9, 2009, prior to issuance of a formal request for proposals.

IARPA is interested in the premise that analysis of how people use metaphor in oral and written communication can provide valuable insights into the similarities and differences in worldview across cultures and subcultures. IARPA is seeking information about the challenges associated with the science and technologies related to the discovery and analysis of metaphor usage. Respondents are encouraged to be as succinct as possible while providing specific information that addresses the following issues. Areas of specific interest include, but are not limited to: 1) Advanced techniques and technologies that will discover, collect and capture linguistic metaphors; 2) Association of metaphors with abstract concepts; 3) Categorization of metaphors; 4) Contrast of metaphors across cultures, subcultures and social context; 5) Methods and processes for the interpretation(s) of the use of metaphor; 6) Ideas for testing and evaluating the use of metaphor, including experimental designs and social science approaches to evaluation. Also of interest are methodologies that could build on the use of metaphors to provide insights into larger narratives/issues. Go to: http://www.iarpa.gov/rfi_META.html

Lymphatic Research

Lymphatic Research Foundation - Postdoctoral Fellowships
The Lymphatic Research Foundation (LRF) announces the 2010 cycle of its Postdoctoral Fellowship Awards Program, the goal of which is to expand and strengthen the pool of outstanding junior investigators in the field of lymphatic research. The awards will support investigators who have recently received their doctorates, which is a critical point in career development when young scientists choose their lifelong research focus. LRF is committed to promoting and supporting basic and translational research, and to fostering an interdisciplinary field of research that will result in improved understanding and/or advances in the prevention, diagnosis and treatment of lymphatic diseases, lymphedema and related disorders. Projects in lymphoma or leukemia research are currently outside the scope of this program. Two-year fellowships from $39,500 - $47,500 annually. Deadline: December 1, 2009. Go to: www.tmfgrants.org/LRF

Nursing

Robert Wood Johnson Foundation - Evaluating Innovations in Nursing Education
In support of Robert Wood Johnson Foundation's commitment to address the nursing shortage, Evaluating Innovations in Nursing Education will fund evaluations of interventions that expand teaching capacity or promote faculty recruitment and retention in nursing schools. An important activity of the program will be disseminating successful strategies so they can be replicated in other nursing education settings. Deadline: November 24, 2009. Go to: http://www.rwjf.org/applications/solicited/cfp.jsp?ID=20742

Roosevelt Studies

The deadline for grant submissions has been changed to November 15. Funds are awarded for the sole purpose of helping to defray living, travel, and related expenses incurred while conducting research at the Roosevelt Library. The grants program is particularly designed to encourage younger scholars to expand our knowledge and understanding of the Roosevelt period. http://www.rooseveltinstitute.org/grants-in-aid
