Alzheimer’s Disease

Brookdale Foundation Seeks Proposals for Alzheimer's Disease Respite Program
A program of the Brookdale Foundation Group, the Brookdale National Group Respite Program awards seed grants to organizations working to develop and implement social model group respite programs. The goals of the program are to provide persons with Alzheimer's disease or a related dementia with opportunities to engage in meaningful social and recreational activities in a secure and supportive setting in order to maximize their cognitive and social abilities, and to provide relief and support to family members and other primary caregivers. Funding is available for up to forty organizations working to develop new dementia-specific programs. Applicants must be non-profit 501(c)(3) organizations or public agencies. All proposed programs must provide day services specifically for people affected by Alzheimer's disease or other related disorders. Grant funds may not be used to support or expand the hours, days, or service capacity of existing programs. Selected organizations will each receive grant support of $7,500 in the first year, renewable for $3,000 in the second year. The sponsoring organization must provide a 1:1 match of cash or equivalent in-kind support. Deadline: Jul. 1, 2009. Go to: http://www.brookdalefoundation.org/

Biological Collections

National Science Foundation - Improvements to Biological Research Collections (BRC)
The Improvements to Biological Research Collections Program (NSF 09-548) provides funds for improvements to network, secure, and organize established natural history collections for sustained, accurate, and efficient accessibility of the collection to the biological research community.

The BRC program is encouraging collaborative proposals to network collections on regional and continental scales, especially collaborations that bring large and small collections together into networks. The BRC program also provides for enhancements to existing collections to improve collections, computerize specimen-related data, develop better methods of specimen curation and collection management through activities such as symposia and workshops. Biological collections supported include those housing natural history specimens and jointly curated collections such as preserved tissues and other physical samples, e.g. DNA libraries and digital images. Such collections provide the materials necessary for research across broad areas of biological sciences.

Proposals submitted to the BRC Program typically are for projects that range from one to five years. The BRC program expects approximately $6 million annually pending availability of funds. Up to $500,000 total for individual awards of 1 to 3 years; up to $2,000,000 total for collaborative awards of 1 to 5 years. Numbers of awards and average award size/duration are subject to the availability of funds. Also, please see the NSF website for the Biological Research Collection program at http://www.nsf.gov/funding/pgm_summ.jsp?pims_id=5448&org=DBI for a current listing of awards and examples of the range and scope of projects supported. Deadline: Jul. 24, 2009. Go to: http://www.nsf.gov/pubs/2009/nsf09548/nsf09548.htm?govDel=USNSF_25

Investor Education

FINRA Investor Education Foundation - General Grant Program
Through its general grant program, the FINRA Investor Education Foundation funds research and/or educational projects that support its mission of providing underserved Americans with the knowledge, skills and tools necessary for financial success throughout life.

In 2009, the Foundation is especially interested in applications that focus on the following areas: using behavioral finance to improve saving and investing; meeting the financial and investor education needs of underserved audiences; creating new marketing and distribution channels for financial and investor education; and helping Americans manage their finances and investments in retirement. Additional funding priorities are specified in the Grant Guidelines.

The FINRA Foundation places high priority on reaching and engaging a well-defined target audience, and encourages collaboration and strategic partnerships that facilitate effective marketing and distribution efforts. Successful education projects will have measurable impact and reach large audiences in a cost-effective manner. Preference will be given to projects that can be replicated and sustained beyond the term of grant funding. For research projects, the Foundation is especially interested in work that has practical applications in the financial and investor education field. Organizations interested in applying for a grant should first review the Foundation’s Grant Guidelines to determine whether the organization and proposed project meet all eligibility requirements. Science Education

National Science Foundation - Graduate STEM fellows in K-12 Education (GK-12)
This program (NSF 09-549) provides funding for graduate students in NSF-supported science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) disciplines to bring their leading research practice and findings into K-12 learning settings. Through collaborations with other graduate fellows and faculty from STEM disciplines, teachers and students in K-12 environments, and community partners, graduate students can gain a deeper understanding of their own research and place it within a societal and global context.

The GK-12 program provides an opportunity for graduate students to acquire value-added skills, such as communicating STEM subjects to technical and non-technical audiences, leadership, team building, and teaching while enriching STEM learning and instruction in K-12 settings. This unique experience will add value to the training of U.S. graduate students and will energize and prepare the students for a broad range of STEM careers in a competitive globalized marketplace. Furthermore, the GK-12 program provides institutions of higher education with an opportunity to transform the conventional graduate education by infusing and sustaining GK-12 like activities in their graduate programs. Expected outcomes include:

1) For graduate fellows - Enhanced understanding of their own research subject area, and its societal and global contexts; improved communication skills of STEM subjects with technical and non-technical audiences, leadership, team building, and teaching capabilities.

2) For K-12 education - Professional development opportunities for teachers in both STEM content and pedagogy; and enhanced learning and STEM career interest for students.

3) For institutions of higher education - Transformation of graduate programs; strengthened and sustained partnerships with local school districts, industry, non-profit sector, etc.; and enhanced institutional impact of graduate education to society.

Deadlines: Letter of Intent: May 19, 2009; Full Proposal: June 29, 2009. Go to: http://www.nsf.gov/pubs/2009/nsf09549/nsf09549.htm?govDel=USNSF_25
