Researcher-of-the-Year & Creative Scholar-of-the-Year Awards
The University Research Committee (URC) invites applications and nominations for these awards. One $2,500 award will be made for each faculty / faculty librarian grade (assistant, association, and full) to honor excellence in creative and scholarly activities and in sponsored and project-oriented research, respectively. If the awardee elects to take the award as a salary subsidy, the awarded amount will be specified above and subject to taxes and FICA. If the awardee elects to use the award to provide additional support for his or her research project, the Division of Research will provide a 1:1 match (awardee salary reimbursement is excluded). If the awardee elects this latter option, the awardee will have to provide a project plan and detailed budget for the URC review before the funds are released. Department of the Army – USAMRMC – Autism Research Program
The program encourages proposals that specifically address critical needs of the Autism Spectrum Disorders (ASD) community in the following areas: 1. Co-morbidity: (e.g., manifestations such as disorders [gastrointestinal, sleep, behavioral, speech/language], psychiatric, seizures, immune dysfunction, motor and sensory deficits, metabolic dysfunction, and effects of ASD on intellectual ability); 2. Predictors for Treatment Outcomes: Identification of biomarkers, clinical characteristics, or other phenotypic markers that predict outcomes of a treatment, or populations that will or will not respond to a treatment (traditional or complementary and alternative). American Cancer Society – Research Scholar Grants in Cancer Control: Psychosocial and Behavioral Research
This grant supports investigator-initiated projects in psychosocial, behavioral, and cancer control research, including epidemiological approaches to psychosocial and behavioral research. Awards are for up to four years and for up to $200,000 per year (direct costs), plus 20% allowable indirect costs. Deadline: Apr. 1, 2009. Go to: http://www.cancer.org/
Susan G. Komen Foundation – Breast Cancer Research
A Heads-Up: Requests for Applications will be issued in April and May 2009:
Investigator Initiated Research (IIR) – up to $600,000 over 3 years to support research exploring new ideas and novel approaches leading to reductions in breast cancer incidence and/or mortality within the decade.
Career Catalyst Research and Career Catalyst in Disparities Research (CCR, CCDR) – up to $450,000 over 3 years to support combined programs of research and mentoring that will further research independence for scientists in the early stages of their career.
Promise Grants (PG) – up to $7,500,000 over 5 years to support multi-disciplinary research contributing to the aggressive translation of scientific discoveries into clinical tools and applications with the greatest potential to significantly reduce breast cancer incidence and/or mortality within the next decade.
September, 2009 – Announcement of Training RFAs:
Postdoctoral Fellowships (PDF) – up to $180,000 over 3 years to expand the skills and expertise of breast cancer researchers and position trainees for independent careers in breast cancer research.
Post Baccalaureate Training in Disparities Research (PBTDR) – up to $135,000 per student over 3 years to support training for students very early in their career to allow them to begin to define meaningful career paths focused on disparities in breast cancer.

Florida Sea Grant
By the Feb. 20 deadline, Sea Grant administrators are hoping to receive a broad set of Statements of Interest addressing 2010-2011 priorities. The four focus areas: Sustainable and Hazard Resilient Coastal Communities, Seafood Production and Safety, Healthy Coastal and Marine Ecosystems, and Climate Change Impacts and Adaptations. The new priorities represent an opportunity for researchers in human dimension as well as marine science disciplines. European Union Scholar-in-Residence Program
The purpose of the Fulbright European Union Scholar-in-Residence Program is to strengthen expertise in European Union affairs by bringing to U.S. campuses scholars from the European Union. Proposals are welcome from research and graduate institutions that have established programs in international affairs, business, political science, or other related fields in which the presence of an EU expert would be beneficial. NIH National Ctr. for Research Resources (NCRR) Shared Instrumentation
The NCRR Shared Instrument Grant (SIG) program solicits applications from groups of NIH-supported investigators to purchase or upgrade commercially available instruments that cost at least $100,000. The maximum award is $500,000. Types of instruments supported include confocal and electron microscopes, biomedical imagers, mass spectrometers, DNA sequencers, biosensors, cell sorters, X-ray diffraction systems, and NMR spectrometers among others. Cruise Industry Charitable Foundation
Foundation efforts are focused on programs that help to improve the quality of life in the communities served by the cruise industry including:
Civic and Community Development – The Foundation is interested in programs designed to enhance community economic development through job creation and training, and provide assistance to local community improvement projects as well as disaster relief or emergency service assistance. The program also suppsorts programs that promote civic education, self-sufficiency and individual awareness programs, at both the youth and adult levels.
Educational Assistance and Training Programs - The Foundation encourages the creation and expansion of learning experiences and opportunities at the primary, secondary and higher education levels, particularly for minority and disadvantaged students. Areas of special interest include educational and training programs designed to improve literacy, teach basic life skills, promote good citizenship and public service, and increase reading, math and science proficiencies.
Public Health Programs - The Foundation assists public health facilities that provide patient treatment or support services for patients and their families. It also supports medical research projects aimed at disease prevention.
Environmental Programs - The Foundation encourages and supports programs designed to promote environmental awareness and public education, as well as the development of enhanced environmental technologies for the maritime sector.

Australian Federation of University Women - Fellowships
The Fellowship Fund Branch of the Federation awards two types of fellowship: The Freda Bage Fellowship (three years), and the Commemorative Fellowships (one year). Commemorative Fellowships may be used for formal postgraduate study. Applications from all academic disciplines are welcome. Fellowships are open to women scholars who are graduates of a recognized tertiary institution from any country and are intending to take up or continue postgraduate studies at a recognized tertiary institution in Queensland, Australia; or, have graduated at a recognized tertiary institution in Queensland, and are intending to take up or continue postgraduate studies at a recognized tertiary institution elsewhere.
