Eating Disorders Research
Hilda and Preston Davis Foundation - Postdoctoral Fellowship
The Foundation hopes that by attracting young scientists to the field, each fellowship may lead to a lifetime career contribution to understanding the biological causes of eating disorders. The long term goal of the program is to accelerate medical research discoveries that will lead to improved therapies for anorexia nervosa and bulimia nervosa. Research areas of interest include but are not limited to neural pathways of feeding behavior in animal models; molecular genetic analysis of relevant neural circuit assembly and function; testing of new chemical compounds that might be used in animal models as experimental treatments; and brain imaging technologies that identify neurochemical pathways in patients with these disorders. Clinical psychotherapeutic studies, medication trials and obesity research are currently outside the scope of the program.
Up to ten three-year fellowships ranging from $43,000 - $63,000 per year, inclusive of a $3,000 expense allowance will be awarded to fellows who have completed no more than three years of postdoctoral research training as of the funding start date. The awards will support postdoctoral fellows working in nonprofit academic or research institutions in the United States. The deadline for applications submission is Thursday, Apr. 2, 2009 for the July 1, 2009 - June 30, 2012 funding period. Go to: http://tmfnet.org/grantmake.html#davis
Education
National Center for Education Research - Summer Research Training on Cluster- Randomized Trials - Jun. 21-Jul. 3, 2009
The National Center for Education Research (NCER) in the Institute of Education Sciences (IES) of the U.S. Department of Education announces its third Summer Research Training Institute on Cluster-Randomized Trials to increase the national capacity of researchers to develop and conduct rigorous evaluations of the impact of education interventions. Applicants must have a doctoral degree and experience conducting research relevant to education. The Training Institute will be held at the Wyatt Center on the campus o f Vanderbilt University, Nashville, TN. Institute participants will be housed at the Embassy Suites Hotel within walking distance of Vanderbilt University. The course sessions will provide intensive training on planning, implementing and analyzing data from a cluster randomized trial. The course will enable participants to: describe the principles underlying randomized experiments and their advantages for making causal inferences; understand the hierarchical structure of populations in education (students nested in classes nested in schools) and its implications for study design and analysis of data; select appropriate measures for assessing outcomes, describing implementation fidelity, and capturing process variables; and, acquire knowledge and strategies for designing and conducting a cluster-randomized trial.
Northwestern University will pay for travel to and from the Summer Training Institute site, lodging, and meals on days of instruction, and for course materials. Summer Training Institute Fellows will be asked to pay a fee of $250.00 dollars to help defray the costs of the Summer Training Institute. Fellows are responsible for the cost of meals in transit (to and from the Summer Training Institute site) and on the weekend (June 27-28, 2009). Application deadline: Mar. 20, 2009. Applicants will be notified by Apr. 30, 2009. Go to: http://www.vanderbilt.edu/crtsummerinstitute/apply.html
Fellowships & Visiting Scholars
N.C. State University - Fellowships in Hazards and Disasters Research
This fellowship program, funded by the National Science Foundation, aims to recruit and mentor junior faculty with an interest in studying the broad range of issues in the social sciences that surround hazards and disasters. Hazards and disasters include natural disasters, technological accidents, intentional disasters (such as terrorism), and the many permutations of disasters, hazards, and risks. The goal of this project is to orient junior scholars in the social and behavioral sciences and in socio-technical fields to hazards and disasters research.
The need for such a program is compelling. The first and second generation of disaster researchers, having laid the foundation for the field, has retired, at the same time that the breadth and depth of hazards and disasters research have grown dramatically. Events like the September 11 attacks and Hurricane Katrina have generated major interest in this field, and demands for research, teaching, and service to our communities and the nation. We invite junior faculty members with an interest in this field to join us as Next Generation Fellows. Go to: http://www.ncsu.edu/project/nextgen/
NIH, National Cancer Institute "Established Investigator Award in Cancer Prevention & Control (K05)"
The NCI Established Investigator Award (No. PAR-09-088) provides qualified cancer prevention, control, behavioral, and/or population scientists with protected time to devote to research and to mentoring new investigators. Deadlines: Feb. 12, Jun. 12, Oct. 12, 2009. Go to: http://grants.nih.gov/grants/guide/pa-files/PAR-09-088.html.
Inland Waterways
Florida Inland Navigation District
The District is providing $29 million in funding assistance to Federal, State and Regional governments to perform waterway improvement projects. Eligible project types include public navigation and mooring, public waterway access facilities, public recreation, inlet management, beach renourishment, environmental education, and boating safety projects directly related to the waterways. The District's FY 2009 Cooperative Assistance Program is available at: http://aicw.org/assistan.htm
Instrumentation
NIH National Center for Research Resources (NCRR) Shared Instrumentation Grant Program (S10).
The NCRR Shared Instrument Grant (SIG) program solicits applications from groups of NIH-supported investigators to purchase or upgrade commercially available instruments that cost at least $100,000. The maximum award is $500,000. Types of instruments supported include confocal and electron microscopes, biomedical imagers, mass spectrometers, DNA sequencers, biosensors, cell sorters, X-ray diffraction systems, and NMR spectrometers among others. Deadline: Mar. 23, 2009. Go to: http://grants.nih.gov/grants/guide/pa-files/PAR-09-028.html
Ovarian Cancer Research
DOD, Dept. of the Army -- USAMRAA - "Ovarian Cancer Research Program (OCRP) Idea Development Award"
Dept. of the Army - USAMRAA – “Ovarian Cancer Idea Development Award” (No. W81XWH-09-OCRP-IDA). While this award seeks applications from all areas of ovarian cancer research, for FY09 the OCRP encourages applications that address critical needs of the ovarian cancer community in the following areas: Initiation and precursor lesions in ovarian cancer with emphasis on the role of the fallopian tube in disease pathogenesis; Molecular understanding of disease heterogeneity; Validation of biomarkers for diagnosis, molecular imaging, and therapeutic response.
A nested Teal Predoctoral Scholarship is being offered as an optional part of the Idea Development Award. The intent of this is to foster the next generation of ovarian cancer investigators through mentored research training of doctoral degree candidates who are committed to a career in ovarian cancer. A nested Teal Predoctoral Scholar is defined as a predoctoral student who is currently enrolled full time in an accredited doctoral program (e.g., Ph.D., M.D./Ph.D., D.Sc.) and who will successfully complete comprehensive examinations or otherwise meets predissertation requirements by the time of award negotiations.
The maximum period of performance is 3 years. The maximum allowable direct cost amount for the entire period of performance is $375,000. If a Teal Scholar is included, the maximum allowable direct cost amount for the entire period of performance is $475,000. Required pre-application submission deadline: Mar. 2, 2009. Full application (by invitation only) due: Apr. 7, 2009. Go to: http://grants.gov. Click on Finding Grant Opportunities, Basic Search, and enter: W81XWH-09-OCRP-IDA.
Various Disciplines
The Educational Foundation of America (EFA)
Applicants are required to send the EFA Inquiry Form via email as the first step. EFA staff reviews all letters, and further information is requested on those that best fit EFA's interests—namely, the interests of its board members.
