Florida Sea Grants
Florida Sea Grant is pleased to announce its 2010-2011 request for Statements of Interest pertaining to the following focus areas: Sustainable and Hazard Resilient Coastal Communities, Seafood Production and Safety, Healthy Coastal and Marine Ecosystems, and Climate Change Impacts and Adaptations. We anticipate funding up to 10 projects, each at up to $100,000 per year, over two years. A non-federal match of 50% (hard dollar or in-kind) is required.
Statements of Interest must address one or more of the research priorities identified for the focus areas. Proposal and funding information, research priorities, preparing the Statement of Interest, and on-line submission guidelines are available on the Florida Sea Grant website http://www.flseagrant.org under the “call for statements of interest” link. Statements of Interest for proposed research projects are due Feb. 20, 2009.
In addition to this call for Statements of Interest, the four Sea Grant programs around the Gulf of Mexico (GOM) are requesting regional research pre-proposals for 2010-2011 that focus on natural hazard and climate change resilience. The available federal budget for proposed research projects will be $200,000 per year for two years; a 50% non-federal match (hard dollar or in-kind) is required each year. Complete details on regional natural hazard and climate change resilience funding priorities and proposal submission guidelines may be found on the Florida Sea Grant website http://www.flseagrant.org under the “open funding opportunities” link. Please note that the submission process is different than that for the Florida Sea Grant core program Statements of Interest identified above. Statements of Interest for GOM regional projects are due on or before Feb. 23, 2009.
Important – these funding initiatives encourage inter-disciplinary work, in particular collaborations between natural and social scientists. So please do not limit the distribution of this email to faculty who traditionally have applied for Sea Grant funds. Please think more broadly and make certain that in addition to the natural sciences, this message also reaches faculty in the social science disciplines (economics, sociology, planning, law, etc.) on your campus.
In both funding cases, there is an expectation that research projects will support graduate education and that the link between research and outreach is carefully planned, clearly articulated and effectively executed in the projects. As in the past, the review process will include a brief Statement of Interest, and then full proposals from a sub-set of the initial submittals. All evaluations will be done via an NSF style peer-review process, with 3-5 written reviews by disciplinary experts and evaluation by a diverse review panel. Contact Florida Sea Grant should you have questions regarding these funding opportunities. Karl Havens, Director, Florida Sea Grant, khavens@ufl.edu, Tel: (392-5870), or Charles Sidman, Associate Director, csidman@ufl.edu
National Oceanic And Atmospheric Administration, National Marine Fisheries Service, Office of Protected Resources
“Proactive Species Conservation Grant Program” NOAA's National Marine Fisheries Service (NMFS) initiated this grant program to support proactive conservation efforts for federally-identified species of concern (SOC). A current list and description of these species is available at http://www.nmfs.noaa.gov/pr/species/concern/#list. The SOC status does not confer any protections under the Endangered Species Act (ESA) or any other law or regulation. Under this solicitation (# NMFS-PRPO-2009-2001608)., the NMFS is seeking to provide federal assistance, in the form of grants or cooperative agreements, to support conservation efforts for these marine and anadromous SOC. Earth Sciences
National Science Foundation – Earth Sciences Postdoctoral Fellowships
The Division of Earth Sciences (EAR) awards Postdoctoral Fellowships (NSF 09-526) to highly qualified investigators within 3 years of obtaining their PhD to carry out an integrated program of independent research and education. The research and education plans of each fellowship must address scientific questions within the scope of EAR disciplines. The program supports researchers for a period of up to 2 years with fellowships that can be taken to the institution or national facility of their choice. The program is intended to recognize beginning investigators of significant potential, and provide them with experience in research and education that will establish them in leadership positions in the Earth Sciences community. Because the fellowships are offered only to postdoctoral scientists early in their career, doctoral advisors are encouraged to discuss the availability of EAR fellowships with their graduate students early in their doctoral programs. Fellowships are awards to individuals, not institutions, and are administered by the Fellows. Deadline: Jul. 1,2009. Go to: http://www.nsf.gov/pubs/2009/nsf09526/nsf09526.html?govDel=USNSF_25

NIH, National Cancer Institute - "Cancer Prevention Research Small Grant Program"
This (R03) funding opportunity is designed to enhance the basic and applied cancer prevention research. The NCI invites applications that propose small and time-limited projects pertinent to the development of cancer chemoprevention agents, biomarkers for early cancer detection, cancer-related nutrition science, and/or clinical prevention studies that focus on specific target organs. Proposed projects may involve basic and/or translational research and/or human subjects-oriented research. However, treatment-related quality-of-life population-based studies, as well as projects focused on cancer etiology, metastasis, or treatment will be considered non-responsive. New, as well as established, investigators in relevant fields and disciplines (e.g., chemoprevention, nutritional science, genetics, infectious agents, and early detection, including biomarker development and validation) are encouraged to apply for these small grants to test the feasibility of innovative ideas or carry out pilot studies. Ultimately, these small grants ($50,000/yr. x 2 yrs.) are expected to facilitate the development of full research projects. Deadlines in 2009: Mar. 19, 2008; Jul. 18, 2008; Dec.19, 2008. Robert Wood Johnson Foundation – “Research Network to Prevention Obesity Among Latino Children – Salud America!”
Salud America! is a national program of the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation (RWJF) that supports research on environmental and policy solutions to the epidemic of obesity among Latino children. The program also aims to develop a network of researchers whose findings will help identify the most promising obesity-prevention strategies specifically tailored for Latino communities. The specific objectives of this call for proposals (CFP) are to: increase the skills and experience of researchers who are working to reduce and prevent obesity among Latino children; and identify the most promising policy-relevant strategies to reduce and prevent obesity among Latino children.
Investigators must propose a project in one of two general areas: 1. Research that has strong potential to inform policy; 2. Evaluation of an existing policy or program, its implementation or its impact. Because the projects funded under this program require close collaboration with Latino communities, proposals are strongly encouraged from investigators who are of Latino descent, who have demonstrated a commitment to working with the Latino community or who can demonstrate a desire and capability to work on the issue of Latino childhood obesity. Research proposals submitted by junior investigators will be considered separately from proposals that are submitted by more experienced investigators.
A maximum of 20 grants will be awarded through this single funding opportunity. Grants of up to $75,000 each, including indirect costs, will be awarded for a period of up to 24 months. All funded http://www.rwjf.org/applications/solicited/cfp.jsp?ID=20506.
TIAA-CREF Institute
The “TIAA-CREF Institute Research Grant Program” was established to encourage scholars to pursue research in areas of interest to TIAA-CREF, such as retirement income security issues and strategic issues in higher education.
Researchers who are interested in applying for a grant are strongly advised to submit a brief letter of inquiry to determine whether the Institute's present interests and budget allow consideration of the request. The letter should be submitted to Paul Yakoboski via email at pyakoboski@tiaa-cref.org. The letter should include the following four items : 1) a short description of the project, 2) estimated overall budget, 3) period of time for which funds are requested, and 4) names of researchers who will be conducting the research. The Institute will respond to the inquiry and may ask the grant seeker to submit a formal proposal. Go to: http://www.tiaa-crefinstitute.org/research/grants/index.html
