"Philosophy begins when one learns to doubt - particularly to doubt one's cherished beliefs, one's dogmas and one's axioms"
-- Will Durant --
The Philosophy Department at Florida Atlantic University offers a high quality Bachelor of Arts degree in philosophy and a philosophy concentration in the Masters in Liberal Studies program. Our B.A. program is consistently viewed as one of the best undergraduate philosophy programs in Florida's public university system.
Many of the students who have graduated with a B.A. in philosophy from Florida Atlantic University have gone on to sucessfully pursue their graduate education at institutions such as Columbia University, The New School for Social Research, SUNY Stony Brook, SUNY Bighampton, the University of Edingburgh, and the London School of Economics.
The quality of both the undergraduate and the graduate philosophy programs at Florida Atlantic University is enhanced by the presence of an active research faculty that produces numerous professional publications and conference presentations, both at the national and the international level. The philosophy faculty also contributes significantly to the College's multi-disciplinary certificate programs and to the Ph.D. in Comparative Studies program.
The Philosophy Department offers an undergraduate program of study with an emphasis in the liberal arts and, at the same time, prepares the student for various career opportunities. The intellectual training provided by the study of philosophy is an excellent preparation for the study of law, for the clergy, for public service professions, as well as for graduate study in philosophy and related disciplines.
In addition to offering the more traditional philosophy major, the Philosophy Department now also offers a philosophy major track in Pre-Law for students who wish to go on to law school. The description of these tracks can be accessed by clicking on the link “Programs” above.
As well, in addition to offering the traditional philosophy minor, the Philosophy Department now also offer a philosophy minor track in the Health Professions for students who wish to go into medicine or other health professions, and a philosophy minor track in Philosophy and the Arts for students majoring in any of the visual or performance arts. The description of these tracks can be accessed by clicking on the link “Programs” and then “ Minors in Philosophy” above.
The philosophy concentration in the Masters in Liberal Studies program provides students with a strong foundation in philosophy at the graduate level. This strong foundation is invaluable for those students who are ultimately interested in pursuing a Ph.D. in philosophy at another institution or for those students who wish to enter the Ph.D. in Comparative Studies program at Florida Atlantic University.
