Scripps Florida to Remain on Jupiter Campus

On Feb.14, 2006, the Palm Beach County Board of County Commissioners approved a plan to locate Scripps Florida’s permanent facilities on FAU’s Jupiter campus and on an adjacent piece of land, the Briger tract, in Palm Beach Gardens.

The decision came after several years of searching for a location. Environmental concerns kept the research facility from its originally planned site of Mecca Farms.

Scripps’ two temporary labs currently house almost 300 scientists and their staffs. The two buildings will become FAU science labs, classrooms and offices once Scripps’ permanent facilities are completed in the next three years.

The University is already collaborating with Scripps scientists in several programs.  The Wilkes Honors College has students signed up for summer internships at Scripps temporary labs and is also hosting a summer institute for rising junior and senior high school students.

Dr. Harry Orf, vice president of scientific operations for Scripps Florida, said,  “The faculty and staff who are here now and have settled in the Jupiter area are, of course, pleased that they will not be required to relocate their homes and families when the permanent facility is completed.  And we in operations are also pleased that we will be continuing our close relationship with FAU, who has welcomed us from day 1.  They have been wonderfully cooperative and helpful, and a true pleasure to work with.”
