Broward Staff Promotion
FAU Davie Campus is very happy to acknowledge the promotion of Jane Morgan to the position of Assistant. Director Academic, Support Services. Jane began her career with FAU, Broward Campuses in 2003 as a Senior Fiscal Assistant and in 2004 she was promoted to Coordinator, Accounting, working with the Broward Budget Office and supervising the Davie Campus Cashier Office.
In her new role, Jane is responsible for administering space utilization for the Davie Campus, including classroom scheduling, FAU special events, and use of facilities by outside groups. Jane's position oversees all on-campus events and coordinates operations involving all campus-wide departments including Computing Services, Physical Plant, Facilities Planning and Public Safety.
Jane earned her Bachelor of Arts degree from FAU in December 2002 and she is completing her Masters Degree in Educational Leadership and expects to graduate in December of this year.

Broward Faculty Promotions
FAU Broward Campus is very proud of our faculty. The following faculty members have been promoted to the ranks indicated:
Stephanie Cunningham was promoted to full Professor with Dorothy F. Schmidt College of Arts and Letters, Department of Visual Arts and Art History. Professor Cunningham has been with FAU since 1997. Cunningham, Professor of Graphic Design, B.F.A. Kansas City Art Institute, M.F.A. University of Notre Dame has contributed to diverse design projects including Sharing Dreams in Cuba, the Urban Forest Project in Times Square and The Means by Which We Find Our Way in New Zealand.
She is a past-president and board member of AIGA Miami. She has been selected to present papers at design conferences including Future History, Schools of Thought, and Intent Content. Stephanie's work has been exhibited widely and recognized by a number of awards and acquisitions. Her work has appeared in publications including Prix Ars Electronica, The Computer in the Visual Arts, and Eye.
Ann-Margaret Esnard was promoted to full Professor with the College of Architecture, Urban and Public Affairs, Department of Urban and Regional Planning. Esnard joined FAU's School of Urban and Regional Planning - SURP) in August 2005 as an Associate Professor and Director of the Visual Planning Technology Lab (VPT Lab). Prior to 2005 she was a faculty member at Cornell University for 8 years where she received tenure. Esnard has helped increase the visibility of the VPT Lab and SURP outside the university and she continues efforts geared at multi-institutional and multi-disciplinary research that addresses disaster planning issues of national significance. For example, she is the Principal Investigator for a 3 year National Science Foundation grant to study hurricane-related population displacement, housing and land development policy issues in coastal counties (http://www.vpt.fau.edu/research/projects/NSF/summary.html).
Professor Esnard remains actively engaged in teaching and mentors students and faculty colleagues at FAU and beyond. Esnard's expertise encompasses GIS/spatial analysis, coastal vulnerability assessment, land use planning, and disaster planning. She has designed GIS course curriculum and has taught GIS to students and professionals with diverse academic backgrounds since the early nineties. Esnard serves as the Chair of the University Research committee and of her College's Research committee. She also serves on a number of state and national committees, including a Committee of the National Academy of Sciences on Private-Public Sector Collaboration to Enhance Community Disaster Resilience, and a steering committee for the State of Florida Post-Disaster Redevelopment Planning initiative.
Rebecca Harlin was promoted to full Professor with the College of Education, Department of Teaching and Learning. Dr. Rebecca Potter Harlin is the Principal Investigator for the Pathways to Teaching Program, a $1.9 million Transition to Teaching grant funded by the United States Department of Education. This five-year grant, a partnership of FAU's College of Education with Broward, Okeechobee, and Palm Beach County public schools, enables new college graduates, career changers, and teachers with temporary certification who have earned bachelor's degrees in areas outside of teaching to fulfill the coursework required for professional certification. In conjunction with this grant, Dr. Harlin is conducting a research study to identify the characteristics of the candidates who become successful teachers.
On the Davie campus, Dr. Harlin teaches graduate and doctoral courses in reading and advises students in the undergraduate and graduate programs. This summer she begins her two-year term as editor of The Journal of Research in Childhood Education and continues her responsibilities as a reviewer and member of the publications committee for the Association for Childhood Education International, one of the oldest professional organizations. Dr. Harlin shares her expertise by mentoring education faculty and graduate students in writing for publication. In her leisure time, she enjoys traveling, reading, shopping, and playing with her grandson.
Angela Rhone was promoted to full Professor with the College of Education, Department of Teaching and Learning. Professor Rhone has been with FAU since 1995, where she has concentrated her work on cultural diversity and international education. She has been recognized for numerous accomplishments including the College of Education's Distinguished Teacher of the Year Award, Broward Achievement Award, the College's Excellence and Innovation in Undergraduate Teaching Award. Between 1998 and 2004, Professor Rhone was nominated yearly for the College of Education's Teacher of the Year Award. One of the most impressive awards she has received is the Teacher Incentive Program (TIP) for the period 1997-1998. Professor Rhone is widely published in educational journals. Among her publications are: Immigrant Caribbean Educators: More Than an Ocean of Difference; Preparing Minority Students for High-Stakes Test: Who Are We Fooling?; Fostering Success Through Group Work With Children Who Celebrate Diversity, and Effective Teaching Techniques to Overcome Teacher Resistance.
In addition to serving on several Dissertation committees, Professor Rhone has been a mentor to several graduate students. In 2007-2008, she was the Coordinator for Graduate Programs in the department of Curriculum, Culture and Education Inquiry. Professor Rhone served on the University Faculty Senate Broward Campus) during 2006-2007; she was the faculty coordinator for Kappa Delta Phi, an education honor society at the Davie Campus. At present, Professor Rhone teaches Education Psychology in the Department of Teaching and Learning and she has just created a new graduate course for the department to service graduate students at the Davie Campus. |

Spring 2009 Broward Employee Graduates (May 2009)
We are very happy to celebrate the following Broward employees who have graduated with degrees from Higher Education Institutions:
Mary Douglas, Broward Campus Police Officer, received her Bachelor of Science Degree on Thursday, April 29, 2009, from Miami Dade College. Mary will continue her higher education journey as an FAU student pursuing the field of Public Administration. Mary will begin working on her Master's degree this summer.
Nyasha Hinds, Executive Secretary, Office of Community Relations, received her Bachelor of Arts Degree on Thursday, April 29, 2009, from Florida Atlantic University.
Shireen Lalla, Coordinator, Testing and Evaluation, received her Graduate degree in Educational Leadership on Thursday, April 29, 2009, from Florida Atlantic University. This is Shireen's second Graduate Degree from FAU.
Melissa Winkler, Executive Secretary, Broward Physical Plant, received her Associates Degree from Miami Dade College on Saturday, May 2, 2009. Melissa will continue her higher education journey as an FAU student pursuing the field of Psychology. Melissa will begin her Bachelor's program this summer. |

Larry Jones | Physical Plant (March 2009)
Congratulations to Larry Jones who was recently promoted to the Broward Maintenance Manager. In his new position, Larry oversees the work of three Broward Physical Plant staff and the custodial contractors at the Davie, Fort Lauderdale, and Commercial Boulevard locations.
Larry has been employed with Florida Atlantic University since 1995 and initially worked with the Utilities Department on the Boca campus. In 2007 he accepted the position of Building Manager for the Fort Lauderdale Campus. Always willing to take on something new, Larry has a positive attitude about learning the 'ins' and 'outs' of the Davie campus while keeping up with Fort Lauderdale and Commercial Boulevard campuses.
Larry is now completing his Bachelor's degree at Broward College. We are proud to congratulate Larry on his well-deserved promotion to Maintenance Manager, Broward Campuses. |
