About the Lecture
FAU is building the capability, infrastructure, expertise, and partnerships needed to develop the methodology and tools to deploy, test, and validate commercially-viable ocean energy systems, such as harnessing the power of the Gulf Stream for generating electricity. Learn how this research is making a unique contribution to a broadly diversified portfolio of renewable energy for the nation’s future.
About the Speaker
Susan H. Skemp joined Florida Atlantic University in March 2008 as the Executive Director of the Southeast National Marine Renewable Energy Center. She has developed a multi-disciplinary program at FAU to address exploration and evaluation of ocean energy potential, specifically ocean current hydrokinetic and ocean thermal energy conversion. Ms.
Skemp has a broad background in industry, Federal policy, and engineering associations. During her 31-year career at Pratt & Whitney, she was instrumental in leading a number of research and technical programs and organizations, including programs totaling more than $110 million with the U.S. Department of Defense and the National Aeronautics and Space Administration.
In addition to her industry experience, Sue held a position in Washington, DC as a Fellow with the American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME), in the Office of Science and Technology Policy, Executive Office of the President. She acted as the policy lead for industrial technology matters, including manufacturing. She also focused on education matters related to K-12 STEM, engineering, and aerospace subjects. She serves on a number of boards and committees, and is the Vice Chair of the ASME Foundation Board of Directors, a past President and Fellow of ASME, and an Associate Fellow of the American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics.
