Harbor Branch was founded with the objective of developing technical and operational capabilities for the purpose of opening the oceans to scientists for exploration and research.  The Center for Ocean Engineering and Technology continues that tradition by bringing innovative technical solutions to research, conservation, and education.  The talented engineering and marine operations staff bring strong capabilities in engineering design, fabrication, instrumentation, and at –sea installation.  Harbor Branch engineers have developed and installed systems to protect endangered manatees from harm from man-made locks in inland waterways.  They have developed state-of-the-art tools to measure and monitor bioluminescence.  They have designed, fabricated, and installed large monitoring systems and buoys and continue to develop innovative sensor systems for visualization of the ocean environment.  The Center for Ocean Engineering and Technology also brings a large research vessel, The RV Seward Johnson, and a considerable array of Harbor Branch developed tools to facilitate exploration and research. The Johnson-Sea-Link II manned submersible is designed specifically to support scientific research with certified operating depths of 3000 feet.  A large shore-based test facility provides an innovative approach to testing underwater sensor packages by simulating motion over the bottom and a newly developed robotics laboratory.  The sum of our extensive research infrastructure and the expertise to employ it in pursuit of scientific objectives provides the scientific community with many unique opportunities to pursue “Ocean Science for a Better World”. We invite you to learn more about our programs and capabilities by exploring our project pages.
