Project Description

HBOI maintains a variety of engineering test facilities to support a wide range of scientific and engineering acitivies. The primary testing facility, the R.C. Tietze Engineering Building, houses two test tanks specifically designed for biophotonics and underwater laser research. The laser tank (21 ft x 41 ft x 78 in deep) is equipped with large camera and observation viewports, a gantry platform above the tank for access and loading, and a novel blackout system comprised of hundreds of small plastic balls that completely block out light from the tank. The biophotonics tank (5 ft x 14 ft x 45 in deep) contains an isolation baffle system to insure "first flash" measurements of various organisms in the tank. Contact Fraser Dalgleish for more information.

The facility contains a 4500 psi (10,100 fsw) pressure testing tank, which can accommodate items up to 24 inches in diameter and 60 inches in length.  The tank has both electrical and hydraulic penetrations for monitoring equipment while under pressure. Typical uses include pressure vessel proof testing and cycling, transducer face pressure testing, and other component certification tasks. Contact Bill Baxley for more information.

The HBOI Robotics & Instrumentation Laboratory is also located in the Tietze Building, used primarily for autonomous robotics projects and underwater instrumentation. A wide variety of measurement and electronic fabrication equipment, including a well stocked electoncis parts inventory, is available for use. Contact Lee Frey for more information.
