Project Description
Engineering services provided by HBOI typically involve the design, fabrication, and testing of unique solutions for the research and educational communities. A staff of ocean, mechanical, and electrical engineers, along with mechanical designers and draftspersons, are available to take projects from concept to reality thru timely, value-added procedures. HBOI also uses 3-d modeling and computer animation extensively during the design process to ensure equipment operates properly and fits properly aboard either the HBOI research vessel Seward Johnson or other research vessels as required.
A well-equipped machine shop, including a computer numerically controlled (CNC) milling machine, is overseen by a highly experienced research machinist. HBOI also maintains a large fabrication faciltiy equipped with welding, cutting, shearing, and other metal-working devices, as well as load handling equipment, fixed and mobile cranes, and large indoor setup areas. The fabrication staff are certified welders (ASME pressure vessel Section 9) and highly experienced in all aspects of metal fabrication. The manufacturing facility has a high ceiling (50 ft) and a large rollup door for unimpeded access, even for very large structures.
