Project Description

In response to aquaculture’s rapid growth, Harbor Branch has developed programs that integrate traditional education with practical industry experience. This approach prepares students to build the foundation for a career, start or expand an aquaculture business, implement new technology, or continue with additional education and training.

Our programs include intensive and college courses, customized training, secondary school field trips, and teacher workshops. Students benefit from learning by participating in research projects and production studies.

Key concepts and new technologies from each research program are incorporated in the curriculum, and are reflected in the hands-on activities, and course manuals that we provide to students.

ACTED, (Aquaculture Center for Training, Education and Demonstration) the aquaculture education entity at Harbor Branch, strives to educate and develop a highly skilled workforce through practical education and training that will support competitive and sustainable aquaculture industries.

Since 1998, Indian River Community College (now Indian River State College) has partnered with the ACTED program to offer an outstanding community college degree program in aquaculture. Our goal is to provide students with the knowledge and skills for employment in the aquaculture industry. Students can receive an Associate in Applied Science in Aquaculture or an Aquaculture Technology Certificate.

Harbor Branch also hosts the International Sustainable Marine Fish Culture Conference. The conference is held every two years and brings together researchers, industry and other stakeholders to identify opportunities that can be developed into commercial reality and to define infrastructure and research needs. Special focus is on emerging finfish species, such as pompano and cobia, and culture systems that have low environmental impact.
