NOTES: Some colleges and departments have specific restrictions on course selection within the core curriculum (see Lower-Division College and Department requirements & recommended courses in the catalog). Some programs require grades of "C" or better in other core curriculum courses. The requirements for some core curriculum courses may be satisfied by passing the appropriate AP or CLEP exam. Gordon Rule credits will be given for ENC 1101 and/or 1102 with an AP score of 3 or higher.

* Gordon Rule Courses: ENC 1101, ENC 1102, LIT 2010, LIT 2030, LIT 2040, WOH 2012, PHI 2010 and the two Math courses; must be completed with a grade of "C" or higher. The PASS/FAIL option is not accepted.

STUDENTS ASSUME ALL RESPONSIBILITY FOR MEETING ALL GRADUATION REQUIREMENTS.

All course selections should be made in consultation with an advisor.

FOREIGN LANGUAGE

(This requirement may be met by ONE of the following):

  1. a first-year (two semester or three quarters) college-level sequence in one foreign language (OR)

  2. (with adequate preparation) the second semester (or third quarter) of a first-year college-level sequence or a higher-level foreign language courses (excluding literature in translation). For example -- SPN 1121. (OR)

  3. Achievement of a satisfactory score (for which two semester of credit are granted) on the College Level Examination Program (CLEP), Advanced Placement (AP), or International Baccalaureate (IB) standardized foreign language examination (required minimum scores detailed in the University Catalog). (OR)

  4. For students educated abroad, certification by the Department of Languages and Linguistics of the originals of documents (appropriate school records or transcripts) attesting that the student's prior secondary and/or high education was in a foreign language. (OR)

  5. Satisfactory completion (by student presenting a language for which no CLEP examination exists) of a standardization examination administered by the Department of Languages and Linguistics.

NOTE: This requirement is not identical to the Foreign Language Admission Requirement (see Admissions). Some specific degree programs requirements may vary. Please refer to the appropriate degree program section for detailed information.

AP/IB/CLEP Credits

Students may earn college credit through Advanced Placement (AP), College Level Examination Program (CLEP) and International Baccalaureate (IB) programs. Up to 45 credits may be earned by examination from among these three programs. AP and IB credit examinations must be taken while a student is still in high school. Official AP test scores must be sent to the Office of Admissions before they are accepted. CLEP examinations are given through the Office of Testing & Evaluation (561) 297-3160 on various dates throughout the semester. A student may earn up to 27 credits through CLEP examinations, and 30 credits through IB examinations. Credit will not be awarded for AP, IB and CLEP examinations covering the same material.

Honors

For Honors students, some sections of the core curriculum may be satisfied by successful completion of an appropriate Honors Seminar. Based on the subject matter, each college shall decide which core substitutions will be made. HONORS SEMINARS meet Gordon Rule Writing Requirement -- "C" or better required.

CLAST

Undergraduate students seeking an A.A. or Baccalaureate Degree from a public institution of higher education in Florida are required to pass all four CLAST subtests within a specific time frame. At least three (3) parts of CLAST must be satisfied prior to the term in which upper-division status (i.e., sixty (60) earned credit hours) is achieved. Certain exceptions are available for the CLAST. For more information contact the Office of Testing & Evaluation at (561) 2967-3160.
