Community Organizations Visit Writing for Nonprofits Class

Dr. Wendy Hinshaw’s ENC 4354: Writing for Nonprofits class welcomed Dr. Mark Roseman, Executive Director of The Toby Center for Family Transitions, on Wednesday, March 20th. The mission of the Toby Center is to preserve family ties when parents choose to separate, providing support and personal growth for parents or couples transitioning through divorce or separation. The center provides an array of services all on a sliding scale, ranging from Individual and Couples Therapy, Family Life Coaching, supervised visitation, and Parent/Child Custody Mediation. Dr. Roseman’s discussion showed the progression of turning an idea into a piece of writing. Imani Bradford and Chelsea Nori, pictured here, volunteer weekly at The Toby Center as part of their service-learning partnership for the class. They introduced Dr. Roseman and discussed the writing projects they had completed thus far with the class. So far, the students have written a policy statement designed for incoming interns; re-furbished a media kit for mailing kits sent to private funders; and made substantial changes to the previous version of the organization's brochure.

On February 27th, The Writing for Nonprofit class of Florida Atlantic University had the pleasure of hosting a visit from Janet Erlick, The Executive Artistic Director of the FortLauderdale Children’s Theatre. During the visit, Janet Erlick discussed with the students what she does on a daily basis as the Artistic Director of FLCT and also about “creating your own box” in a work environment, and concluded by answering questions from the class. This non-for-profit agency with its central hub located at the Galleria Mall in Fort Lauderdale is South Florida’s oldest children’s theatre, celebrating its 61st year in operation. Shauna Mogan and Amelia Thompson, the two students who are currently volunteering for FLCT through the Writing for Nonprofit course helped organize the event. On Wednesday, February 13, 2013, Director Wendy Friswell of the Twin Palms Center for the Disabled came to Wendy Hinshaw’s ENC 4354: Writing for Nonprofits class to discuss the role of the nonprofit organization in the community. The center works and spends time with individuals diagnosed with developmental delays in order to bring to light their talents, as well as further develop and enhance their abilities. Wendy spoke about the Twin Palms’ aim to educate those outside of the disabled adult community about the people they are working for and with. She stressed the importance of networking and general communication in building community awareness. She hopes that through knowledge and understanding, more people will be aware of the needs of those with developmental delays as well as their role as an active portion of society. Dr. Wendy Hinshaw’s ENC 4354: Writing for Nonprofits class welcomed Kelly Rowland, Executive Director of S.B. Idea Inc., on Wednesday, February 6, to give a presentation discussing her nonprofit work. The mission of S.B. Idea is to teach English literacy to adults and children and to empower parents through literacy skills so that they can have an impact on their children’s educational development. S.B. Idea offers GED preparation and ESOL courses for adults, PACT courses where parents and their children learn together, and pre-kindergarten classes. All of S.B. Idea’s services are free and open to anyone who has a child, grandchild, niece or nephew attending school in the Palm Beach Country school district. Kelly discussed many topics with Dr. Hinshaw’s class, ranging from the meticulous work of editing print and online materials to the demanding and often competitive field of writing grant proposals. Featured in this picture, from left to right, are Kelly Rowland with her service-learning volunteers Alexandra Lloyd and Josh Zepeda. Alexandra will be working on grant proposals, sponsorship letters, newsletters, and social media. Josh will be writing instruction manuals for volunteers and employees, assisting with grant proposals in research and editing, and creating bilingual advertisements such as flyers.

FAU Professor Awarded Prestigious PEN/O. Henry Prize for Short Story
Papatya Bucak, Associate Professor and Director of the MFA Program, has been awarded a prestigious 2013 PEN/O. Henry Prize for her short story, “The History of Girls." Please view the following link to read more about Professor Bucak's accomplishment.

Literary Agent Laura Strachan delivered a lecture, "To Query or Not to Query," on Thursday, Feb. 23rd. Laura Strachan established her literary agency in 1998 to combine her lifetime love of books and good writing with her background as a licensed attorney. She is a current member of both the Maryland and District of Columbia Bars, as well as the Author's Guild, and was cited in the Jan/Feb 2008 issue of Poets & Writer's Magazine as one of "21 Agents You Should Know."
