Meet Our Scholarship Students

In the fall of 2007, we had 11 fully funded students in the MURP program:

Susan Brown Susan Brown is a 1st year Excellence in Planning Student from the University of Washington in Seattle and has been assigned to the Department. Susan has a background in archeology and was the perfect candidate to inventory, catalogue and update the CUES library. The new John DeGrove Research Library is now located on the 10th floor of the HEC building in downtown Fort Lauderdale and was officially opened on November 19; however, the library will not be completely functional until May 2008.
Sheryll Muriente Sheryll Muriente is a 1st year Excellence in Planning Student with an Architecture degree from FAU. She is assigned to Kasama Polakit and is performing research on “Urban Form in Little Haiti”. The goal of this research is to suggest urban design guidelines for place-based context as opposed to generic form-based code which is now in the process to replace land use restriction.  The guidelines will also cover the issue of ecological design in response to the locality such as the issue of natural environment, micro-climatic condition, socio-cultural and socio-economic context and quality of public/community space.
Joella Chaveco Yoela Chaveco is a 1st year Excellence in Planning Student with a degree in Sociology from the University of Havanna, Cuba. She is assigned to Kasama Polakit and is working with Sheryll Muriente on the above described research in Little Haiti.
Andrea Hayes Andrea Hayes is a 1st year Excellence in Planning Student with a Psychology degree from the University of Florida. She has been assigned to David Prosperi and is working on the organization of the two Planning Abroad programs this year.
Martin Fitts Martin Fitts is a 2nd year Excellence in Planning Student with a degree in Business Administration from the University of Southern Mississippi. Martin is assigned to Joyce Levine and is doing research on social vulnerability to displacement by major disasters.  His personal research interests include transit rider perceptions of safety and how they influence travel mode choice and factors influencing adoption of water conservation innovations by consumers.  He plans to continue his educational endeavors by pursuing a PhD degree upon graduation.
Chris Chagdes Chris Chagdes is a Research Assistant for Ann-Margaret Esnard and is funded by the NSF grant: Displacement due to Catastrophic Hurricanes: Assessing Potential Magnitude and Implications for Housing and Land Development Policies. He has Bachelor of Arts degree in Geography from the University of Wisconsin in Milwaukee. Chris is in charge of gathering census related data and creating GIS maps for the NSF hurricane project.  If students have any questions related to GIS or using ArcGIS, Chris is always happy to help.
Jill Horwitz is a 1st year Excellence in Planning student with a Bachelor’s degree in Environmental Science and Policy from the University of Florida. She has almost 10 years experience in environmental advocacy, community partnerships, fund-raising and non-profit management. Recently, she built a coalition of green designers, investors, stake holders and policy makers to design a vision and strategic plan for the rebuilding of the Flamingo visitor center and lodge at Everglades National Park. Jill also helped to successfully lobby against the permitting of a coal-fired power plant within a Class1 Air Quality area near the Everglades. She will be working with Diana Mitsova-Boneva on issues of climate change at the city level.
Joseph Zamora is a 1st year excellence in planning student with an Industrial & Systems Engineering Degree from the University of Florida.  Joe's real estate background includes founding TheHelpNetwork.com, a socially conscious effort to provide affordable housing along Mississippi's Gulf Coast, while providing lucrative opportunities to investors.   With a first year return on investment (ROI) of 80%, the project was centered on the Go-Zone legislation and incentive funding through the Mississippi Development Authority.  As a private investor, Joe has been involved in new construction, land acquisitions, bulk real estate transactions, preconstruction investments, and project funding.   He will be working with Dr. Asli Ceylan Oner on a project titled "Measuring the US Space Economy under Conditions of Contemporary Globalization."  The project focuses on the location strategies of advanced producer service firms in a selection of global cities and aims to identify the economic links between these cities.
Lauren Schild is a second-year student in the Master Program. She has a Bachelor of Science degree in Agricultural Education & Communication from the University of Florida.  As a research assistant at the Center for Urban & Environmental Solutions, Lauren has been involved in a plethora of projects such as Marine Workforce Need Assessment of South Florida, Florida's Ocean and Coastal Economies, and FEMA's Disaster Resistant University: Creating a Hazard Mitigation Plan for FAU.
