AROUND THE WORLDS OF MUSIC

Danette Littleton

DESCRIPTION: In a style that’s conversational, and a format that invites interaction, this series will transport participants to music, old and new, exotic and familiar. The musical tour will include North and South America, Africa, Europe, and Asia. We will explore each musical selection by how it sounds: musical instruments and dance, voices and languages. We will explore each selection by what it means: rites and rituals, celebrations and communication, cultural origins, and geographical locations. The presence of folk music in each culture and its local and global influences will be examined. Composers of the 19th and 20th-Centuries found inspiration, musical motifs and content in the folk music of their own and other cultures.
