BROOKE ASTOR
“Money is like manure; it should be spread around.”
Performer: Myrna Goldberger
Recipient of the 1999 LLS Excellence in Teaching Award
These words were the philosophy of Brooke Astor, applauded socialite, personal philanthropist and heiress of the Vincent Astor fortune…a woman dedicated to “making life better for the people of New York” by improving, creating and expanding what she called her “crown jewels.”
In this self-written one-act play, prose and parody are combined to relate the life of Brooke Astor from her childhood to her three marriages, to her role as head of the Vincent Astor Foundation and to her involvement in a family scandal that shook New York near the end of her 105 years.
