More International Cinema
Instructor: Dr. Kurt F. Stone
Course Description: Increasingly, some of the best movies that modern cinema has to offer are neither filmed – nor shown – in America. Without film festivals and “art-house” cinemas, many fine jewels of filmic art would fly well below the radar, being virtually unknown to the great mass of moviegoers. This course makes a small attempt at rectifying this situation by presenting – what are in Dr. Stone’s estimation – excellent films from around the world.
Six Lectures/Screenings
1. “At Five in the Afternoon” [Iran/France, 2004]” Directed by Samira Makhmalbaf.
The first film made in Post-Taliban Afghanistan.
2. “The Beautiful Washing Machine [Malaysia, 2004] Directed by James Lee.
A critically acclaimed absurdist comedy.
3. “12:08 East of Bucharest” [Romania, 2002]: Directed by Corneliu Porumbolu.
Winner of the 2006 Camera d’Or award.
4. “Waiting for Messiah” [Argentina, 2002]: Directed by Daniel Burman. A gently
funny film about the Jewish community in Buenos Aires.
5. “What Time is it There” [Taiwan/France, 2001]: Directed by Tsai Ming-Ling. A rare film
that actually expands and deepens in the memory long after the screening is over.
6. “The Boss of it All” [Denmark, 2006]: Directed by Lars von Trier. A rare Danish
comedy about a firm that hires an actor to pose as its CEO.
Biographical Information: Now in his seventh year with LLS, Kurt Stone - bestselling author, lecturer, actor and rabbi – is a Hollywood native whose love of film is, in his words, “both a family legacy and inheritance.”
