Great Works of Western Literature
and Philosophy
Great Books VI
Instructor: Dr. Stanley Fried
Course Description: This is a six-week study group that reads and discusses literary and philosophical text in an anthology from the Great Books Foundation of Chicago. This class is organized around the “shared inquiry” method of discussion to help participants interpret and evaluate the meanings and ideas of classic works from Western literature and philosophy.
Course Textbook: Great Books Reading and Discussion Program: Series Three: Books may be purchased at the FAU/LLS office. Those students who have participated in Great Books V will NOT have to purchase books.
This course is limited to the first 25 students.

1. HOMER: The Iliad (Please read & be prepared to discuss in first class)
2. MONTESQUIEU: Principles of Government
3. AESCHYLUS: Agamemnon
4. JAMES: The Beast in the Jungle
5. MACHIAVELLI: The Prince
6. TOLSTOY: The Death of Ivan Ilych
Biographical Information: Dr. Stanley Fried attended Columbia University, Virginia Polytechnic Institute and the New York University College of Dentistry. He completed classes in the Greek classics, as well as programs in Shakespeare, Joyce and the history of philosophy. He has served as discussion leader in Great Books study groups in South Florida and taught English, history and science as a substitute teacher in Palm Beach County high schools. Dr. Fried is a lifelong history buff specializing in Pre-revolutionary and Revolutionary War history, the Civil War and World War II.
