For Parents

The Wilkes Honors College recognizes that parents are integral to a college student's success, whether the student lives at home or across the globe.

The WHC Parents Council is a unique group of volunteers comprised of parents of current or former students who are committed to the mission of the college to provide a premier honors education. The Parents Council celebrates the successes and future development through active participation with:

The Wilkes Honors College values the roles of parents and encourages participation in the college experience of the family. There are regular meetings and communication to share  successes of the college and approaching events and activities.

RECRUITMENT
Members of the Parents Council are encouraged to identify prospective students, speak with those students and their parents about the benefits of an Honors College education. Parents may participate in Preview Day, Open House, or serve as a representative at College Fairs in their area. Assisting with follow-up emails and/or phone calls adds to the sense of family that is enjoyed at the college.

DEVELOPMENT AND COLLEGE RELATIONS
Parents Council members assist in outreach efforts by hosting occasional receptions for admitted, yet undecided students in their area. Parents may also identify prospective donors and make introductions on behalf of the Wilkes Honors College. Supporting and/or finding sponsors for college events and securing needed gifts-in-kind also add significant value to the college’s success.
Parents are encouraged to: write letters to potential or noted donors; serve as volunteers for fund-raising events and attend events as possible.  The Wilkes Honors College benefits by direct contributions to the Annual Giving Campaign and by direct support for scholarships and programs.

EVENTS AND ACTIVITIES
The college hosts numerous events and activities during the year and welcomes parents to attend these events. Those who are able to increase awareness of these activities and participate add significant value to the college’s success.

INTERNSHIPS
Parents and their employers may utilize college interns, the Wilkes Honors College would like to add the information to its database of possibilities for the students. As each student is required to complete an off-campus internship or a study abroad, we try to provide links for opportunities to develop their skills. Let the college help you help the students.

PARENT RELATIONS
Parents are invaluable resources for the parents of other college age students. The parent networking that shares information and answers questions provides much needed support from someone who’s “been there” and “done that.” If you are a parent of a prospective student who would like to be referred to a parent in your area, contact us.
