Program Summary
The Henry Morrison Flagler Scholarship Program, created by The William R. Kenan, Jr. Charitable Trust (established by Henry Flagler’s brother-in-law), supports exceptional undergraduate students, from the State of Florida, to attend the Honors College of Florida Atlantic University. The Henry Morrison Flagler Scholarship is a full merit award that provides extraordinary student-leaders with financial freedom to pursue higher education goals and participate in annual enrichment programs. The program seeks to further personal and intellectual development of outstanding scholars within the environment of Florida Atlantic University’s residential Honors College as a foundation to promote global awareness, understanding, interaction, and peace.

Henry Morrison Flagler Scholars are expected to be, in demeanor and achievement, superior citizens of the college and the world. Their presence in the Honors College is expected to enhance the excellence of the Honors College through their contributions in the classroom and in campus and community life. Additional information may be obtained from the Honors College Office of Admissions.

Eligibility
Student must be an incoming freshman and a Florida resident to be eligible to receive a Florida Bright Futures Scholarship.

Criteria:
Leadership: Students must demonstrate exceptional leadership ability, including the capacity to motivate and lead others.

Scholarship: Academic distinction is necessary but is not the singular determining criterion for selection as a Henry Morrison Flagler Scholar. High-school students considered for a Henry Morrison Flagler Scholarship must meet admission qualifications of the Honors College, as well as award requirements. Recipients of the awards must maintain an Honors College grade point average (GPA) of 3.0 to maintain eligibility for renewal of the award.

Integrity: Students must show evidence of strong moral character.

Courage: Students must demonstrate courage to challenge themselves in academics, community service and problem solving environments.

Vigor: Students must display energy — a zest for life — as shown in sports or other venues.

Henry Morrison Flagler Scholarships include:

Honors College Full-Time Undergraduate Merit-based Scholarship

  • Tuition and Fees not covered by the Florida Bright Futures Scholarship
  • Room and Board

Study Enrichment Program

  • Outward Bound Program (summer before the Freshman year)
  • Non-Profit Program (summer before the Sophomore year)
  • Enterprise Program (summer before the Junior year)
  • Study Abroad Program (summer before the Senior year)

Peer Mentor Program

  • Entering freshmen are matched with upper classmen to enhance their introduction to the program and to guide them through the first year of college.

Leadership Lunches

  • Scholars will meet regularly once per month to have lunch with the Dean, and either the President of FAU, distinguished FAU faculty, visiting speakers or guests.

Fall and Spring Henry Morrison Flagler Scholar Retreats

  • Scholars will meet for a full day retreat at the beginning of the fall and spring semesters to provide an opportunity for fellowship, to introduce the freshman students, to renew friendships, to share summer experiences and to preview the upcoming term.

Application

Students who wish to be considered for the Flagler Scholarship are required to apply for admission to the Honors College by December 15. The following materials are required: the Florida Atlantic University application, $30 fee, official transcripts and test scores, Honors College supplemental application, résumé, graded writing sample, and two letters of evaluation. If selected, students, will be invited to campus for interviews.

Selection Timetable:
During student’s senior year in high school:
December 15 Deadline for applicants to submit completed application for admission to the Wilkes Honors College.
January Selected students are notified of their status and invited to campus for interviews.
February Campus interviews are held and Flagler Scholars are selected.
