FAU's Lifelong Learning Society Expands to Broward

FORT LAUDERDALE, FL (December 20, 2005) - Florida Atlantic University's Lifelong Learning Society has now extended its program and course offerings to the Broward community. Taught by FAU professors and distinguished guest lecturers, course offerings include such varied subjects as foreign policy, music, art, history, acting, ethics and movies. The current term's Broward course offerings range from jazz to Broadway to Jewish humor. With a diverse content base, classes are tailored to suit a large cross-section of interests, broadening cultural exposure and awareness for mature community members.

"We are pleased to extend to the Broward community that service already available to Boca and Jupiter residents," said Phyllis Bebko, assistant vice president of FAU Broward campuses. "This program provides university-level scholarly experiences to students who may no longer be in the workforce but who have an abiding intellectual curiosity and a commitment to continuing their learning. Lifelong Learning supplements the wide variety of services already available to Broward residents by adding a challenging academic option."

More than two decades ago, the Lifelong Learning Society was founded in 1980. The program's goal has always been to enrich the lives of mature students by offering learning opportunities through non-credit, university-level courses. Seniors enjoy their own curriculum, along with concerts and entertainment. Originally established on the Boca Raton campus, the program was implemented in northern Palm Beach County in 1997. In a few short years, enrollment has grown from 120 to more than 17,000 students. There are more than 60 courses available at various locations throughout Palm Beach and now Broward County.

"Lifelong Learning is an invaluable method of reaching out to people in our community," said Jack Latona, lawyer, writer and Lifelong Learning faculty member. "By encouraging intellectual and personal growth, these programs enable mature students to keep learning and living with vitality, stimulating new ideas and interests in their lives."

Course registration is available now for the Winter 2006 session. For more information, please contact Sherre Clegg-Jolly at 954-762-5187 or sjolly@fau.edu. Additional program information is available at the official Lifelong Learning website www.lll.fau.edu.
