FAU Names New Police Chief
BOCA RATON, FL (December 16, 2005) - Florida Atlantic University named William Ferrell III as its new Director of Safety and Security, Chief of Police. A former sub-district commander in Broward County for the Florida Highway Patrol and current Lieutenant and Public Affairs Officer, Ferrell has served the FHP in different capacities for nearly 25 years.
"I am very excited about this opportunity," said Ferrell. "The men and women of the FAU police department are a fine group of police professionals, and I am eager to become a part of their team. With the support of these professionals, along with my leadership, we will lead this department into a new and exciting future."
Ferrell, who will join FAU on January 3, 2006, will lead a department made up of 34 sworn officers and will oversee 92 employees. As Director of Safety and Security, Ferrell is responsible for ensuring a safe and secure campus environment that supports students, educational and social growth, faculty development and staff support. Ferrell is also responsible for formulating policies and procedures, as well as the development and implementation of crime prevention programs, parking enforcement and general security programs on all FAU campuses.
"Mr. Ferrell's extensive law enforcement background will bring to the University a wealth of knowledge that will enhance our police department and our public safety efforts," said Dr. Ken Jessell, vice president for financial affairs. "His overall attitude and enthusiasm for the position makes him the right person for the job."
