FAU High Opens Enrollment for 2006 - 07 Academic Year
Public Information Session Scheduled, Deadline to Apply is December 31
BOCA RATON, FL (December 8, 2005) - Florida Atlantic University High School is currently accepting applications for the 2006-07 academic year. Parents and students can learn more about the high school at a public information session to be held Tuesday, December 13 at 6:30 p.m. in the Lifelong Learning Center Auditorium on the FAU Boca Raton campus. Online applications available at www.coe.fau.edu/fau%2Dhigh/ are due by December 31, 2005. School transcripts, tests scores and recommendation letters to support the student application must be submitted by January 30, 2006.
Like international baccalaureate and advanced placement dual enrollment programs available to students in area high schools, FAU High targets highly motivated and academically successful students. Admission to the program is based on tests scores, letters of recommendation from school officials and supporting materials that attest to the student's maturity level and academic ability.
"A recent study of FAU High's dual enrolled students finds that these students take more coursework, make a greater percentage of A's and have a higher GPA than traditional dual enrolled students," said Glenn Thomas, executive director of FAU High.
Opportunities for students to earn college credit while in high school is fairly commonplace with all but three states allowing some form of dual enrollment, according to the Education Commission of the States. These programs can lower the cost of postsecondary education for students and shorten the time it takes to complete their degree. FAU High graduates can earn nearly three years' worth of college credits at no cost. An annual $500 student activity fee is charged for non-instructional costs for students who are not eligible for the Federal Free and Reduced Lunch program. If eligible, students are charged a reduced rate or none at all. Although school administrators recognize they can not offer the total high school experience, the school is able to put forward more student activities this year. FAU High now offers Florida High School Athletic Association recognized boys and girls teams in swimming, diving, track, cross country, golf, tennis, soccer, volleyball and basketball. Key Club, Student Government Association (SGA) and the National Honor Society are also active organizations at the school.
