FAU Holds Open Debate Forum to
Commemorate Constitution Day
BOCA RATON, FL (September 14, 2005) - Florida Atlantic University students will host an open debate forum on Friday, September 16 from noon - 4 p.m. at the University Center lobby on FAU's Boca Raton campus to commemorate the 217th anniversary of the signing of the United States' Constitution.
The theme of this year's forum is "How does the Constitution affect our everyday lives?" Everyone is invited to participate in the debate forum. Topics to be debated include - Whether or not the death penalty violates Constitutional rights? Should we have a separation of God and state? Does the Patriotic Act infringe on the personal rights of American Citizens? Does the Constitution protect gay marriage? These and other controversial topics will be debated by concerned students, faculty and anyone interested in voicing their opinion. The forum will be moderated by the American Democracy Project, a non-partisan organization on campus.
"Having the opportunity to educate our community on important issues that affect our students and communities is a staple of great universities," said Cynthia Ferman, director of community relations for Student Government. "Many universities strive on having unbiased debate forums and we would like to begin that tradition at FAU."
