FAU Libraries Presents RoseMarie Chiarlone Book Art Exhibition
August 22 - October 8
BOCA RATON, FL (August 29, 2005) - Florida Atlantic University Libraries present the work of nationally recognized artist RoseMarie Chiarlone, featuring her Book Art Exhibit at FAU's John D. MacArthur Campus Library from August 22 - October 8, 2005. The exhibition is free and open to the public.
The display is a collection of unique and small edition books that address the social and historical ideologies related to life, society, gender and desire. "I explore non-traditional mediums, spatial entities, incorporation of text, and light, juxtaposing non-traditional materials, text and imagery in ways that redefine the techniques and traditions of bookmaking," said Chiarlone.
The sculptural books range in size and medium, pushing the boundaries of the format of a traditional book. "My work is stimulated by the intrigue of juxtaposition of image and text as a vehicle for artistic creation and social expression," she notes.
Of the ten books on display, some were seen at the Pyramid Atlantic: a Center for Print Paper & Book Art, Silver Springs, Maryland and at the Spaces Gallery, Cleveland, Ohio as an installation work - ""Dissent: Political Voices" Diverse and Thought Provoking Art at Spaces."
Chiarlone, impressed by FAU's attention to art and art galleries, especially The Arthur and Mata Jaffe Collection: Books as Aesthetic Objects, responded to the Jupiter campus library exhibition committee's call for artists to present their works. Her book art exhibit is the first to be installed in a new, continuous series of displays at the library.
"The goal of our exhibition program is to introduce the students, faculty and community to contemporary art that highlight current and important events, while adding excitement and aesthetics to our library," said Diane Arrieta, exhibition committee chair. "We have invited RoseMarie back in 2006 to exhibit her installation work Lifestyle. Surprises are in store for viewers in this inaugural display in the libraries new (24' x 24') twenty-four by twenty-four foot 'installation work space.'"
