FAU Honors College Faculty Member Receives Fulbright Award
JUPITER, FL (July 8, 2005) - Dr. Timothy J. Steigenga, an associate professor of political science and Latin American studies at the Harriet L. Wilkes Honors College of Florida Atlantic University, has received a Fulbright Visiting Scholar award to teach and conduct research at the Latin American Faculty of Social Sciences (FLACSO) in Guatemala City, Guatemala. This grant is awarded by the Council for International Exchange of Scholars (CIES), the Bureau of Education and Cultural Affairs of the Department of State (ECA) and the Fulbright Foreign Scholarship Board (FSB).
Steigenga will spend six months in Guatemala, dividing his time between teaching Inter-American Relations and Religion and Politics courses at FLACSO, and conducting research on migration, transnationalism and religion.
In 2004, Steigenga received the Excellence in Undergraduate award in teaching from FAU. In 2005, his work with Palm Beach County's Guatemalan community (through the non-profit, Corn-Maya Inc.) was recognized when he received FAU's Presidential Leadership Award, the TIAA-CREFF Service Award, the MacArthur Campus Unsung Hero Award and the Dwight Allison Fellowship Award from the Community Foundation for Palm Beach and Martin Counties. Steigenga's areas of research include comparative politics, religion and politics, transnationalism and migration.
