FAU Hosts Mold Training Courses throughout the State
BOCA RATON, FL (July 15, 2005) - Florida Atlantic University's Florida Institute of Safety and Construction has enhanced its mold training program.
The state legislature acknowledged the need for training and assigned a member of the Department of Business and Professional Regulation to work with industry leaders and legislators to develop legislation to encompass training requirements. FAU is a Construction Industry Licensing Board (CILB) provider and has two classes on the August CILB meeting agenda. Currently, FAU is the only institution of higher education that offers the industry training.
"FAU is working hard to provide the community with the education needed to ensure a safe environment," said Maurice Baum, Fort Lauderdale chapter director of the American Indoor Air Quality Council. "This course allows contractors to meet and exceed the education and experience requirements set forth by the industry standards."
To meet the training needs of mold assessors and remediators, the institute, which is housed in the College of Architecture, Urban and Public Affairs, has developed two training classes that exceed the requirements of the industry, ensuring the competency of its students, by requiring a passing score of at least 70 percent on a closed-book exam.
FAU will bring these classes to six universities in the state, including FAU, University of South Florida, University of Florida, Florida State University, University of North Florida and the University of Central Florida. The classes are named Mold Remediation Supervisor and Microbial Investigative Consultant and are recommended to mold assessors and remediators, as well as engineers and architects. The first set of classes will be offered from July 26-28 at the FAU Commercial Boulevard campus in Fort Lauderdale.
FAU is presently working on a program to begin this fall titled, Moisture and Mold Prevention during the Construction Phase, a credited class for architects and engineers.
