FAU's Human Rights Organization to Discuss Impact of Free Trade on Human Rights

BOCA RATON, FL (April 15, 2005) - FAU's Human Rights Organization (HRO) will host a program entitled The Crisis in Mexico: Fair Trade, Globalization, and Human Rights on Wednesday, April 20 from 7 - 9 p.m. in the Barry and Florence Friedberg Auditorium on the FAU Boca Raton campus, 777 Glades Road.

Gabriela Martínez López, of Chiapas, Mexico, Tom Hanson, from the Mexico Solidarity Network, and Dr. Bernadette Lange, from FAU's College of Nursing Community Wellness Centers program, are the keynote speakers. Hansen will speak on the devastating consequences of unbridled free trade on Mexican lives, both in Mexico and in the United States. He will explain what U.S. citizens can do to support the efforts of indigenous Mexican people in their efforts to develop alternative and sustainable economies. López will discuss the Chiapas community's alternative economic efforts and how these are supporting women's empowerment. Lange will discuss both the health and social hardships that Mexican immigrants face in our local communities.

Authentic Mexican cuisine and beautiful hand-made Mexican textiles will be featured from 4 - 6 p.m. in the Grand Palm Room of FAU's University Center. Proceeds from the sale of the handmade textiles from Mujeres por la Dignidad, a women's fair trade cooperative in Chiapas, will go back to Chiapas and support that community and its development. The program and food are free and open to the public. This event is sponsored by the Human Rights Organization, with funding from FAU's Student Government Association.

For more information about the program, contact the Human Rights Organization at fauhroboca@yahoo.com or call 954-684-4818.
