FAU to Host African American Heritage
Preservation Conference
BOCA RATON, FL (April 13, 2005) - Florida Atlantic University's Center for Urban Redevelopment and Education (CURE) and the Center for the Conservation of Architectural and Cultural Heritage (CCACH) will be hosting its fifth biennial Florida African American Heritage Preservation Conference. The event will bring together experts and pioneers in the field and will include book signings, writer workshops and a reception with authors.
The conference is a four day event from April 20-23 at the Sheraton Hotel, 321 N. Ft. Lauderdale Beach Blvd. (Rte A1A), Ft. Lauderdale.
The keynote speaker will be James C. Early, director of Cultural Heritage Policy at the Smithsonian Institution Center for Folk-Life and Cultural Heritage in Washington, D.C. Organizers have brought together a wide variety of presenters who will cover topics that will include "Funding Preservation and Conservation Projects," "Folklife Oral Histories," "Heritage Tourism," "Infusing African American History into the Curriculum" and more. FAU's President Frank Brogan, honorary chair of the event, will be among the speakers.
The conference, which has been traditionally been held in Tallahassee, provides individuals and organizations involved in African American heritage preservation with information and networking opportunities that allow and equip them to implement programs and reach their cultural and historical goals and objectives. It finds inventive ways to cultivate and promote the work of the Florida African American Heritage Preservation Network and help identify endangered African American heritage sites in the southeast region. Most importantly, the conference sets long-term strategies for saving Florida's African American historic sites and cultural heritage as part of an overall plan to protect and celebrate all of the state's historical and cultural resources.
