BOCA RATON, FL (April 1, 2005) Florida Atlantic Universitys School of the Arts presents its second annual Jazz Festival on Friday, April 8 and Sunday, April 10. The weekend will feature contemporary jazz guitarist and three-time Grammy nominee Mike Stern and his band. All events will take place on FAUs Boca Raton campus, 777 Glades Road.
The weekend starts with a jazz clinic with Mike Stern and Lincoln Goines (bass) on Friday from 12-2 p.m. in the Arts and Letters Building, Room 260. Seating is limited and admission at the door is $5 for the public and free for FAU students, faculty, staff and alumni. The Mike Stern trio, with Mike Stern, Lincoln Goines and John Yarling (drums), will then perform at 7:30 p.m. in the University Theatre. Tickets for this concert are $15 for the public and free for the FAU community. Admission for non-FAU students is $10.
On Sunday, April 10 at 3 p.m., FAUs Vocal Jazz Ensemble, Sax Ensemble and Jazz Band will perform in the University Theatre with songs like Our Love is Here to Stay by George and Ira Gershwin and Take the A Train by Billy Strayhorn. Tickets are $10 for the public and the FAU community may obtain free admission.
Stern started playing professional guitar at the age of 22 with a band named Blood, Sweat and Tears. He then went on to play with Billy Cobham and was later recruited by Miles Davis. Stern released his first record in 1986, Upside Down, and he was named Best Jazz Guitarist of the Year in 1993 following the release of his album Standards. Sterns 1994 release of Is What It Is and the 1996 release Between the Lines both received Grammy nominations, and in 1997, Stern was awarded the Orville W. Gibson Award for Best Jazz Guitarist. Stern earned his third Grammy nomination in 2001 with his first vocal release Voices.
Tickets may be purchased by calling 561-297-2977 or emailing artstickets@fau.edu, or they may be purchased one hour prior to the performance.
