FAU Hosts Free Family Concert with
Kevin Hathway and his Elastic Band

BOCA RATON, FL (February 4, 2005) - Kids and kids at heart won't want to miss Kevin Hathway and his Elastic Band in a free concert for music lovers of all ages at Florida Atlantic University on Sunday, April 3 at 3 p.m. The concert will take place in the University Theatre on FAU's Boca Raton campus, 777 Glades Road.

The Elastic Band is a 15-piece orchestra made up of a string quintet plus one woodwind and brass piece, and a percussion section. Hathway founded the band as a way to let children and adults experience the full range of fun and possibility offered by the instruments in an orchestra. The band presents new renditions of popular classics and encourages the audience to get involved in making the music. This helps, as he says, "stretch the imagination" about what an orchestra can be.

Conductor Kevin Hathway is Florida Atlantic University's 2004/2005 Distinguished Visiting Scholar supported by the Dorothy F. Schmidt Eminent Scholars Chair. He has been co-principal percussionist with London's Philharmonia Orchestra in London since 1979 and has traveled the world extensively both with the Philharmonia and as a percussion clinician. Highlights of recent performances include appearances at Buckingham Palace and London's "String of Pearls Festival" to celebrate the Queen's Jubilee. Hathway has also met great acclaim in the United States where he has given concerts in the Austin Chamber Music series, Texas; San Luis Obispo Festival, California; and at The Britt Festival, Oregon.

The concert is presented by the School of the Arts' Department of Music in FAU's Dorothy F. Schmidt College of Arts and Letters, in partnership with Bank of America and the Palm Beach County Cultural Council.
