FAU Presents David Jones
to Speak on Fish Research
BOCA RATON, FL (February 18, 2005) - Florida Atlantic University will present Dr. David R. Jones to speak on the topic of "Necrophysiology: A Fishy Tale" as part of FAU's Charles E. Schmidt College of Science Frontiers in Science lecture series. The lecture will begin on Thursday, March 3 at 4 p.m. at FAU's Boca Raton campus, Charles E. Schmidt Biomedical Center, Room 126, 777 Glades Rd.
This lecture will focus on Jones' research with fish hearts and how they can reveal its blood pressure even many years after its death. His research falls into two categories: the comparative physiology of diving animals and the functional morphology of circulatory systems in a range of vertebrates and invertebrates.
In 1984, Jones was elected to fellowship in the Royal Society of Canada in recognition of his research on blood pressure receptors. In 1986, he gave a full lecture on his diving studies to the International Union of Physiological Sciences. Jones was also the recipient of the Flavelle Medal of the Royal Society in 2000, for outstanding contributions to biological science in the previous 10 years.
Jones is a distinguished scholar and professor of zoology at the University of British Columbia. He received his Ph.D. from the University of East Anglia in the United Kingdom.
The Frontiers of Science Lecture Series, which is free and open to the public, is sponsored by the Charles E. Schmidt College of Science with support from FAU's Lifelong Learning Society Endowed Professorship. For more information on the series, call 561-297-2954.
