The play, written by Ronald Ribman, will run in the University Theatre on FAU's Boca Raton campus, 777 Glades Road Thursdays and Fridays at 8 p.m. and Sundays at 2 p.m. Individual tickets may be purchased for $16, with group discounts available. This Obie Award-winning drama, set in the winter of 1850 in St. Petersburg, tells the story of Zoditch, a low-paid reader at a publishing house. Zoditch is given the task of reading the diary of a now-deceased nobleman who had fallen on hard times. As Zoditch becomes engrossed in the sadness and despair of the dead man's life, he realizes that his life parallels it in many ways. We watch as Zoditch struggles to learn from the story and change his life, and we see how difficult it is to make such a change.
"'Journey' is a great character study that forces actors to portray relationships and emotions in a variety of ways," said J. Barry Lewis, guest director for the play. "It is a dark comedy of sorts that looks at what our small lives mean in the larger scheme of things."
Lewis was recently awarded the Carbonell award for his work in "Alive and Well" which was staged last year at the Palm Beach Dramaworks Studio Theatre. He was also awarded the South Florida League Lifetime Achievement Award last December.
Theatre-goers may remember "Journey" from when Dustin Hoffman played the role of Zoditch in the off-Broadway run of the play in New York City. His portrayal brought him such acclaim that he was asked to play the leading role in the movie "Midnight Cowboy," and his fame grew from there.
The play is presented by the School of the Arts' Department of Theatre in the Dorothy F. Schmidt College of Arts and Letters at FAU, in partnership with Bank of America and the Palm Beach County Cultural Council.
Tickets may be purchased by calling 561-297-2977 or emailing artstickets@fau.edu , or they may be purchased at the event one hour prior to the performance. For more information about the play, call the arts update hotline at 561-297-2977 or visit www.fau.edu/artsupdate.
