FAU President and First Lady Announce Winners of
Creative Writing and Photography Awards

BOCA RATON, FL (January 20, 2005) -
Florida Atlantic University President Frank T. Brogan and First Lady Courtney Brogan recently announced the winners of the Frank and Courtney Brogan Creative Writing and Photography Awards at a reception at FAU's Eleanor R. Baldwin House. Kathrine Wright won the Award in Prose for her piece entitled "Yes, But Not Enough," Erika Kluthe won the Award in Poetry for her poem entitled "Re-membered" and Brian Cook won the Photography Award for his photograph entitled "Stolen." Each award is accompanied by a $500 scholarship.

"Establishing traditions that honor the collaborative talents of our faculty and students is very important to Frank and me," said Courtney Brogan. "The Creative Writing Awards offer an opportunity for members of the FAU family and community friends to experience and celebrate the creative genius of our students."

The winning pieces were selected from the 2004 edition of FAU's literary magazine "Coastlines." A committee, including Courtney Brogan and members of her local book club, chose the winners from finalists nominated by faculty in the Department of English at FAU's Dorothy F. Schmidt College and Arts and Letters. Finalists included Tee Angel, Scarlett Rooney, Acelia Grassi and Jay Slone for creative writing and Ralph Notaro, Jay Sloan, Vanessa Kaplan and Scarlett Rooney for photography.

"Coastlines magazine represents some of the finest work coming out of our creative writing and arts program," said William A. Covino, dean of the Dorothy F. Schmidt College of Arts and Letters. "In these pieces, the students explore the capacity of prose, poetry and the camera to evoke the shades of experience that comprise the human condition."

Kathrine Wright is a first-year fiction student in FAU's MFA in Creative Writing program. Her poetry, fiction and nonfiction have appeared in "New Orleans Review," "Weber Studies," "The Environment" and elsewhere.

Erika Kluthe is working on her MFA in Creative Writing degree at FAU and is a graduate teaching assistant. She published her first poem in 2004 in the "Provincetown Arts."

Brian Cook graduated from FAU with a Bachelor in Fine Arts degree in the fall of 2004. His work was included in several shows at FAU and in "Odium" in Delray Beach and "Showtel3" in Lake Worth.

For more information on FAU's creative writing program or to receive the newest issue of "Coastlines," please call the Department of English at 561-297-2973.
