FAU Marketing Professor Receives Teaching Award

BOCA RATON, FL (December 23, 2004) - Allen Smith, a faculty member in the Department of Marketing of FAU's College of Business, was recently named the Stewart Distinguished Professor for 2004-05. The recognition was enabled by a generous gift from the Virginia and Douglas Stewart Foundation.

Smith, one of 15 semi-finalists for the award, was ultimately selected based on his outstanding concern for students, both in and out of the classroom. The award was based on five criteria: extraordinary dedication to undergraduate teaching; impact on and involvement with undergraduate students; scholarly approach to teaching and learning; contribution to undergraduate education in the institution, community and profession; and support from colleagues and current and former students.

"This award was recommended by Gary Luing, a former dean of our college," said J. Dennis Coates, interim dean of the College of Business. "We are grateful to Douglas M. Stewart, the grandson of the donors, and to Gary Luing and the rest of the members of the board of the Virginia and Douglas Stewart Foundation. We congratulate Allen Smith."

Smith teaches new product development, marketing strategy in global environments and advertising classes. He is a two-time recipient of a Teaching Incentive Award sponsored by the Florida State University System and was also recognized as Outstanding Graduate Instructor while at Texas Tech University.

Smith received a doctorate degree in Business Administration from the College of Business Administration at Texas Tech University and is listed in "Who's Who Among America's Teachers." He has published three books and various journal articles on the topic of marketing and advertising.
