Florida Atlantic University Visual Arts Faculty to Participate in Miami's Art Basel

BOCA RATON (November 23, 2004) - The faculty of Florida Atlantic University's visual arts program will present their work in "FAU South," an exhibition in the Miami Design District, a part of the prestigious international art fair "Art Basel Miami Beach." The exhibition opens on Saturday, December 4, 2004 and runs through Saturday, January 8, 2005, with a regular weekend schedule of Thursday, Friday and Saturday from 12 - 5 p.m., except the holiday weekends of December 23 - 25 and December 30 - January 1. The exhibition takes place in the Living Room Building, located at the corner of 40th Street and North Miami Boulevard, just north of Interstate 195 and just east of Interstate 95. The exhibition is free and open to the public.

The faculty members whose pieces will be included in "FAU South" include Amy Broderick, Stephanie Cunningham, Walter Delaney, Blane de St. Croix, Angela DiCosola, Peter Fine, Walter Hnatysh, Linda Johnson, Tammy Knipp, Andrew Kulawik, John McCoy, James Novak, Carol Prusa, Kathleen Russo and Edmund Skellings. Their work covers a wide range of media including painting, sculpture, ceramics, photography, and graphic design. Many of them have won highly competitive regional and national grants, fellowships and residencies, including the prestigious South Florida Cultural Consortium's Visual Arts Fellowship awarded to Amy Broderick, Blane de St. Croix, Carol Prusa and Tammy Knipp.

Also on display will be "Me, Myself and I: Video Remix," a selection of video works from "Me, Myself and I," an exhibition curated by Paul Laster and Renee

Riccardo currently on view at FAU's Schmidt Center Gallery in Boca Raton. The exhibition presents a selection of contemporary work created over the past five years by a group of emerging and recognizable artists who are investigating issues of self-portraiture and identity. Among the artists that will be included in the video remix include Anthony Goicolea, Sofia Hulten, Guy Richards Smit, Natalia Benedetti and the artist team of Diana Shpungin and Nicole Engelman.

"FAU South," which marks the FAU faculty's debut at "Art Basel," was selected by Miami gallery owner and art historian Bernice Steinbaum. Since moving her well-regarded New York City gallery to Miami in 2000, Steinbaum has been a leader in the visual arts community, helping transform the annual "Art Basel" from a city-wide event to an international function. Steinbaum's selection of "FAU South" proves the quality and diversity of the artists who teach the visual arts at FAU.

For further information about "FAU South," contact W. Rod Faulds, director of the University Galleries, at 561-297-2966 or wfaulds@fau.edu. FAU's Department of Visual Art and Art History is part of the Dorothy F. Schmidt College of Arts and Letters' School of the Arts. For more information about the program, call 561-297-3870.
